‘Point Break': The enduring appeal of Zen garbage (Hollywood remake alert)
Washington Post ^ | 27 May 15 | Justin Wm. Moyer

In 1991, what appeared to be a serious movie was released by 20th Century Fox, a serious movie studio. The movie, “Point Break,” featured two serious movie stars, Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. It was helmed by serious talent Kathryn Bigelow, who would become the first female director to win an Academy Award (for “The Hurt Locker,” in 2008). It cost serious money — $24 million — and made very serious money, grossing more than $80 million dollars. And now, it’s getting a 100 percent serious $100 million remake, the trailer for which was released Tuesday (here).

Yet, “Point Break” was transparently ridiculous.

Plot: Reeves is Johnny Utah, a curiously named FBI agent who must go undercover as a surfer to infiltrate a gang of surfer-bankrobbers led by Swayze, a.k.a. Bodhi — short for bodhisattva, an enlightened being in Buddhism. Though it is Utah’s mission to apprehend Bodhi, he falls more than a little in love with the man, who robs banks wearing a Ronald Reagan mask, and his pseudo-Zen lifestyle.

First I heard of a Point Break remake. Didn't know one was in the works.

OK, I'll 'fess up. My buddies and I probably watched this movie a hundred times when it first came out. And I'll watch it until the end when I come across it on TV. One of my guilty pleasures.

It is entertaining. The remake will probably not be.

Will they shoot their guns into the air and yell “Arrgh!?”

If the Red Dawn remake is the measuring stick we are in for a sucky movie.

The movie... ...featured two serious movie stars, Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves.

In my opinion, the author should rethink this claim...

It is entertaining. The remake will probably not be.

It'll be worth a $2 Redbox Blu-Ray rental at home on the big screen. The photography and stunts from the trailer looked cool. It'll probably lack the campy magic from the original that made it such a classic guilty pleasure.

Have you ever fired two guns whilst jumping through the air?

Yeah, it’s a fun flick, but I doubt it will work with a different cast, and a different kind of Hollywood studio system that will probably make it very formulaic to cater to the lowest common denominator.

I won’t argue that it was a no-holds-barred adrenaline fuelled thrill-ride, but there’s no way that you could perpetrate that amount of carnage and mayhem and not incur a considerable amount of paperwork.

I’ll let them leave that out, as long as they leave out Lori Petty as the “eye candy”.

Seriously, whoever cast her as the love interest is most likely a homosexual pedophile, someone should look into that.

Gary Busey, as Reeves’s cranky supervisor, seems imported from an alternate dimension.

Gary Busey ALWAYS seems imported from an alternate dimension.

I think anybody who breaks the Billion dollar box office total would be considered a serious movie star.

I used to paste-up movie ads. Every summer there will be at least one “slam-bang rollercoaster ride of an adventure” review. Guaranteed to get the reviewer’s name in the paper.

'Surfings the source, man. Swear to God.'

Immortal dialogue.

I wonder who will reprise Anthony Kiedis part?

I am so sick and tired of Hollywood’s pointless, slap together, cast any actor, then apply liberally as much CGI as you can muster awful remakes.

Whatever Hollywood once was, it is no longer, and never will be again.
