Oh, don’t worry, the Romans were pretty nasty to people within their own country, plenty of conspiracy and power struggles happened. Heck, Nero had his own mother killed for the sake of power. IMHO, the Romans refused to acknowledge themselves as defeatable from the outside until it was too late, they convinced themselves as to how great they were by how well they could bully their own.
