Derision, rather than refutation, seems to be the norm of discourse in mainstream politics as well. Accordingly, opposing views are seen as a sign of some moral defect, not genuine disagreement. Earlier this year, for example, a prominent Democrat compared delaying the confirmation of Loretta Lynch as attorney general (shes the first African-American woman to be given the role) to Jim Crow segregation. Elsewhere, questioning certain sexual-assault statistics makes one a rape apologist; proponents of traditional marriage are dismissed as bigots; and even President Obama is called sexist for arguing with Senator Elizabeth Warren about a trade bill (he called her Elizabeth).
Progressives think their vitriolic name-calling undermines their opponents. But Munger has it right: The absence of [dissent] is harmful, not so much to those who would agree with the dissenting voice, but to those who are thus denied the chance to collide with error.
A recent study suggests the Republican Party is the strongest it has been in decades. Should this trend continue, should liberals lose the minds and hearts of Americans, should prejudice not die but fester, then progressives need only look in the mirror to find whom to blame.

“You need a better class of friends.”
I used to see people say this and think to myself “Never drop friendships over politics”. I was completely wrong.
My wife and I hung out with a lot of different people with differing-to-polar-opposite political views throughout our late 20s / early 30s ... most of them were left of center. I’d argue with them constantly. I’d always win. Literally. It’s not like I should wear a merit badge for that ... it was more a waste of time :-). Anybody with an 8th grade education could have won those arguments :-).
I never run my mouth unless I know I am 100% correct :-). They’d run their mouth no matter how drunk or devoid of facts they were. I’d get FACT CHECKED by these people. Once or twice I could understand, but it was ALL OF THE TIME.
After a while, one can only take so much of that garbage. They started out kind of normal and fun to hang out with. These people mutated into something narcissistic to the core with zero morals, and, for lack of better terms, never wanted to grow up. Anytime anyone had experienced anything resembling success, they’d turn ‘red’ with jealousy. My last straw was when they all started to declare bankruptcy around 2006 or 2007 and were blaming everything but themselves.
I know a show like “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” isn’t exactly popular here on FR, but these people were almost IDENTICAL to those characters, only not lovable ones since these people weren’t fictional :-).
My wife and I slowly disassociated ourselves from that crowd. I couldn’t stand the difference in political opinion anymore to say nothing of the daft commentary and narcissism I’d have to ‘tolerate’.
Since then, I’ve felt healthier mentally and physically :-). My blood pressure is a rock solid 120/80 and I no longer have to listen to drunks ramble about how everything is wrong with the world, the man keeping them down, and that nothing is their fault.
Yes, I know I am the moron for choosing to associate with that kind of people :-) ... it was one hell of a life lesson though.
Friends should never let friends associate with liberals. If they’re in your life, RUN away NOW!!!! Don’t piss away five years of your life associating with them. You only make yourself stupider as a result :-).
You learn nothing aside from the fact that most of these people are hurting inside but are too proud to face the fact that they are the ones causing the hurt. When nothing is your fault, you’ll be oblivious to things that are a direct result of one hurting one’s self.
I’ll tackle how to handle liberals in the family when I have more time. Until then, avoid liberals at all cost :-).
LOL
To the contrary, liberals have found a new host to infect, the GOP. They already own the Democrat party lock, stock, and barrel, and are now making headway with the GOP. Soon, there won't be anyone in D.C. to disagree with liberals.
New! Are you kidding?
Most of the RINOs are also DINOs.
Most of modern liberalism is based on feelings, not logic. It is very difficult to make a logical argument if all one has is feelings.
“Derision, rather than refutation, seems to be the norm of discourse in mainstream politics as well.”
That was true in LA in the 70’s and 80’s as well. Were one bold enough to express a conservative opinion, the entire weight of the party would descend on you in a name-calling spree.
They’ve completely worn it out.
I don’t care what they call me anymore.
They learned their “craft” by copying the snarky snobbish way of speaking from college professors, John Stewart, and HuffPo. Then you add in the echo chamber effect where they think they are so right, that they have no qualms literally screaming at opponents to shut them down, on in the case of some websites, they actively censor opposing viewpoints, labeling them “bigoted” as an excuse.
Mine went about 6 years without speaking to me. I saw her at Christmas and she seemed to have grown up a bit.
Confucius Say ....The wise speak when they have something to say
