Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer made the announcement at a news conference Wednesday.
The slain officer was identified as 7-year veteran Kerrie Orozco, 29.
According to Schmaderer, Orozco and other officers with the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force were conducting surveillance on a shooting suspect in the area of Martin Avenue and Read Street just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers spotted the suspect, identified as Marcus D. Wheeler, in front of a home off nearby Vane Street.
Schmaderer said Wheeler fired several shots at officers and then fled toward a home on Martin Avenue.
When officers confronted Wheeler, police said, gunfire was exchanged between officers and the suspect, leading to Orozco's injuries.
Schmaderer said officers found that Wheeler was also suffering from gunshot wounds and had a semi-automatic handgun with a high-capacity drum magazine lying next to him.
Orozco and Wheeler were taken in extremely critical condition to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center, where they later died.
A trauma surgeon said doctors did everything they could to save them, but both ultimately succumbed to their injuries.
Law enforcement took over security at the hospital's trauma unit, which is standard procedure in these incidents. Deputies initially told KETV that the hospital was on lockdown; however, hospital officials said patients were free to come and go from the facility.
Schmaderer said Orozco gave birth prematurely to a child in February and that the baby is scheduled to be released from the hospital this week. Orozco also has two step-children.
Just today, the Nebraska legislature voted to end capital punishment in their state. The governor has promised to veto the bill, but there are currently enough votes to override.
Maybe if enough people in that state are outraged by this murder, perhaps they can persuade enough legislators to not vote to override the veto. Certainly the police union should support capital punishment for cop murderers.

You are jumping to conclusions. I simply stated that they are very effective at killing bikers, which is the truth. Thus far, we know that four of the nine were killed by the cops, all with very effective head shots. Like you, I’m waiting for the investigation’s results to be made public. I would like to know if the bikers actually shot at the cops. I would like to know if any of the other five killed were actually shot by the cops and which one’s, if any were shot by other bikers. Stuff like that, so we all can make the determination as to who did what to whom and in what sequence. BTW, I hate the bikers and what they stand for, and the fact that a few of them are in the ground is a good thing. I’d just like to know that they were afforded the same rights as the rest of us.

You can buy em for almost every handgun, glock, beretta, browning high powers, 1911’s, Sig’s H&K etc..... Was issued a Glock 18 back when that had a few drum mags for it ..... fun yet more of a bag gun versus a concealed tool of the trade. I did use the 33 round stick mags that were also issued with it. The drum mags are impractical imho yet worked for this bad guy.

You can get a Glock 9mm drum easily. A lot of people use them on pistol caliber rifles like the SU2000.
I would bet it was something like a semi-auto MAC 11 pistol.
