PEARLINGTON -- A Hancock County lawman narrowly escaped an attempt on his life during a roadside stop Monday night on U.S. 90/Chef Menteur Highway, when three men attacked him from behind and tried to carry him off into a wooded area.
Sheriff's Chief Investigator Glenn Grannan said it appears the attackers intended to kill the deputy as they fought for his sidearm and tried to carry him off the roadway.
"It seems like they were trying to take him back to the woods," Grannan said while on the scene early Tuesday. "They were going to dispose of him. They were going to finish him."
The Sheriff's Office Tuesday afternoon identified the deputy as Todd Frazier, a K-9 officer with about three years on the force. Chief Deputy Don Bass also identified Frazier's canine partner as Officer Lucas.
The incident occurred about 10 p.m. at a rest stop on U.S. 90/Chef Menteur Highway and Lower Bay Road, about 4 miles east of the Louisiana state line.
Chief Deputy Don Bass said the deputy, who serves as a K-9 officer, stopped to check on a driver sitting alone in a car parked at the rest stop.
Unaware that two other men were in the woods behind the rest area, Frazier walked up to the driver and began speaking to him. The other men emerged from the woods, drawing the deputy's attention away from the driver, who got out and started attacking.

Mississippi deputy injured in Hancock County nighttime traffic stop, newspaper reports
This little rest stop is not to far from my home. Pretty dark and deserted at night.
This is a strange incident with a lot of questions left unanswered.
Huh. No description of the perps - but “They had a Lincoln Town Car with nice chrome rims”.
sounds like the work of one of those pesky Amish gangs
Where was the dog?
One can make and educated guess.
Back seat of the patrol car. Read the article.
“...all three were black males...”

Lawlessness is increasing. Thugs may not respect the police, but I guarantee you they will respect the business end of a 45. Would you rather be judged by 12,or carried by 6?
Molon labe.
Thanks for the link.
One thang I can’t figure out is why 22” chrome rims always seem to attract bullets.
Its a rim fire thing.
The author of the story wrote in the comments section that the police officer didn’t give him a description. He said he pressed for one, but the officer was still in the hospital and “shaken up” and didn’t provide one.
If they were that quick to try and kill a cop, they either must have felony warrants on them, or they were transporting something highly illegal, like drugs, or they were up to something bad in the woods before the officer showed up.
Might not be a bad idea to take some cadaver dogs out to that patch of woods to check. One driver waiting while two guys go out in the woods? Could be a pit stop I guess, or it could be they were already “disposing” of something.
Probably had a bunch of drugs in the trunk. Thank goodness for the pooch.
That there were seriesly funny.
LOL
The article did not say but I’m sure the woods around have been checked thoroughly.
“a blue Lincoln Town car with a black vinyl top and large chrome rims ....”
That was a very “popular” color combo! Lots of them running around everywhere!(s) Surprised they aren’t in custody already.
Good doggie!
I hope Officer Lucas tore ‘em a new one. Good dog!!
