An oil spill was reported Tuesday at Refugio State Beach, about 20 miles west of Santa Barbara, spanning about four miles along the coastline.
A citizen reported the leak coming from a ruptured pipeline off the 101 Freeway to authorities at about noon. The pipeline, owned by Santa Maria-based Plains All-American Pipeline, was on land, and the oil flowed from land into the ocean.

Nice campground and beach up there.
OH NO!!!! we are all gonna die!
Not me — I’m going to dip my comb in it and work on my ducktail.
I dont have enough hair left!
Went to UCSB from ‘64 to ‘68. (This was before the big spill). There were always tar balls on the beach. The dorm shower rooms were equipped with kerosene so we could clean our feet.
It was cleaned up immediately with a paper towel.
It's not the end of the world.
There was a story a few years ago about an oil spill thought to be from a sunken ship, tank, or old well that was leaking into the Pacific. The first or second page article went on about how those responsible will have to pay, when caught.
A week later there was a small paragraph deep inside the paper about how the source of the leak was a fissure in the earth’s surface that was allowing a natural oil deposit to leak.
From the link they say 10,000 gallons which equals less that 250 barrels, that’s just a little over a full transport load. Within 24 hours most of that will flash off to the atmosphere and will continue to flash off over time. A ground spill takes longer to flash off due to different depths in the oil but a water spill because of the way it fans out to a fine layer flashes off quickly. Pour a gallon of gas out on a flat concrete surface and watch how fast it evaporates, a barrel of oil contains 20 to 22 gallons of gas. A water spill is easier to clean up than a ground spill as far as recovery of oil lost, if you can catch it before it hit’s the shore line.
