The Florida man charged with shooting George Zimmerman had a “fixation” with his target and recently spent time in a mental institution, police said.

Matthew Apperson, arrested for the shooting the neighborhood watch leader in Lake Mary last week, was recently sent to the mental facility showing signs of paranoia, anxiety and bipolar disorder, according to a police report released Tuesday.

Zimmermann was shot last week as he drove through the Orlando suburb. He told cops Apperson got behind his truck and yelled, "You remember me, you fat mother f----r?"

Apperson continued to berate Zimmerman, screaming, "You owe me your life. The only reason I didn't press charges on you is because I wanted to kill you myself," according to the police report.

In September, Apperson claimed his target threated to kill him during a road rage incident in which Apperson again asked, "Do you know who I am?" No charges were filed in that case.

During the latest confrontation, Zimmerman called the heckler a "clown," he admitted to cops.

That's when Apperson fired into Zimmerman's car before fleeing the scene. Zimmerman was nearly hit in the head, but suffered only minor scratches.

The 36-year-old shooter surrendered himself to police Friday.

Apperson was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and firing a missile into an occupied conveyance.

Apperson shot into Zimmerman's car, police said.

His lawyer said he was acting in self-defense when he fired opened fire.

Zimmerman was acquitted of any crime two years ago for fatality shooting unarmed teen Trayvon Martin.

I do not know what was going on with that guy in particular, but like you I am open to the idea some of these shooters are being manipulated for purpose.

Is there some sort of a gun agenda behind the manipulation? I don’t know.

There are sick people out there. Some of them are obviously wing-nuts. So some of them do go postal on their own. I don’t want to avoid that reality.

I still think that some of these shootings are just too convenient.

Anti-gun legislation is being considered. All of a sudden there’s a big gun incident. Seems I’ve seen this happen enough times for it to click with me. Then again, I may have selective or faulty memory too.

Have you noticed this? Have others, or am I the only one who sees it like this?

I also believe many of these people are under psychiatric care. If they are, why are they going postal anyway? It seems as if someone is seriously miscalculating the threat of these people.

I also question if some of the new medications that have come out over the last ten years, and particularly the last five, seem to have some way crazy side effects. They warn about higher levels of suicide. What about higher levels of mass murder?

Are the folks getting some of these medications 100 times more likely to think of killing a large group of people?

Something is sure going on, and I don’t think it’s the water.
