Few political spouses in recent memory have been as wary of the spotlight as Columba Bush, Jeb's wife of 41 years. But her husband's presidential potential means the spotlight is about to find her.
Now and then in an otherwise unmemorable speech, Jeb Bush will drop a mention of his wife, like a sudden pop of color. At an event in Nevada this March, one of his first speeches of this campaign season, before a crowd of what The Washington Post called everyday Americans, Bush opened with a husband-still-in-thrall routine. His life, he said, can be divided into two parts: b.c. and a.c.before Columba and after Columba, referring to Columba Garnica de Gallo, the woman he fell madly in love with while on a high-school trip to Mexico and then married 41 years ago.

The role of political spouse always entails sacrifice, but Columbas case has been extreme. Jebs time in office coincided with stretches when Columba was reportedly unhappy, because of his absence or because of troubles with one of their three children or because she herself had landed in the news in ways that mortified her. It was during Jeb Bushs governing years that Columba let it slip to the press how her husbands career had damaged their children, and that she reportedly told Jeb he had ruined her life. During his governorship, which ran from 1999 to 2007, she often retreated to Miami while he was living in Tallahassee.

That phrase “pop of color” makes me want to throw up
The entire article will make you want to throw up.
Jeb is dead meat in a general election. If the GOPe insists on handing him the nomination it is abundantly clear they are just throwing that election to the Democrats.
I’d call it “Pop of Anti-Sovereignty”. This Hispanic pandering has to stop.
Mexico’s own version of Imelda Marcos.
Wow, just what we need, a zero for a First Lady. Especially compared to the wives of most of the conservatives.
What’s the big deal. I’d divorce my husband of 57 years if he ran for president. She is private........so what?
She married into a political family...bet she likes the moolah
Yeah, like wow, what difference does it make????
/sarc
I’m gonna call it the GOPee from now on......
She will not be a plus on the campaign trail.
No more steenkin Bushes! Especially one whose wife was named ‘Columbia’. Perhaps she is the gem of the ocean, but no thanks!
No more Klinktons either.
Hispanic pandering.
Black pandering.
Muslim pandering.
Gay pandering
White hating.....
America 2015.
Yes....but I was speaking mainly about GOPe’s efforts at it. They’ve set their mind they can win with increased “Hispanic” support - don’t say actual citizens, however. They’ve counted blacks, gays and conservatives out.
The media is holding this back for a better time but she tried to screw customs out of thousands of dollars in tariffs and fines by importing designer clothes and saying they had been worn. She’s a cheat on taxes that everyone else is expected to pay. Don’t think that after our first black President and First Lady we need our first Mexican First Lady. Enough already of people who think that the rules don’t apply to them!
Agreed. Haven’t we had enough of a First Lady who does not love this country? Jeb, make her happy and move to Mexico!
“”” Jeb Bushs courting of Columba at 17 is possibly the most outlandish thing hes ever done. In a family where the sons traditionally choose their wives from a small society circle, Jebs choice registered as baffling, even reckless. In 1970, as a senior at Phillips Academy, a boarding school in Andover, Massachusetts, he took a class called Man and Society, which explored poverty, conflicts, and the dynamics of power. At the end of the winter term, the students could choose to spend three months either in a poor neighborhood in South Boston or in a poor indigenous village outside León, Mexico. Jeb was from Texas and already studying Spanish. Along with 10 other classmates, he opted to skip the Boston winter.”””
Isn’t that sweet. Jeb rescued a poor latina from a life of poverty.
She refuses to speak English. I think she really hates the fact that Jeb “rescued” her from Mexico.
