Three Wisconsin Supreme Court justices skipped a ceremony Monday to swear in recent Marquette University Law School graduates, amid a bitter dispute over who should be in charge of the state's high court.
It was the first time the court was to meet as a group since conservatives who control the court voted to make Patience Roggensack chief justice. Shirley Abrahamson, who had held the job for 19 years, has contended she remains chief justice and has sued over the issue in federal court in Madison.
U.S. District Judge James Peterson, who is hearing that case, declined to issue an order Friday allowing Abrahamson to serve as chief justice while she pursues her case, and signaled she would have a difficult time ultimately winning her lawsuit.
Monday's ceremony showed relationships on the court remain strained. Roggensack has said repairing the court's reputation is a top priority.
Apparently boycotting Monday's event were Abrahamson and Justice Ann Walsh Bradley and N. Patrick Crooks. Those are the three justices who did not vote for Roggensack as chief justice and contended the email vote putting her in place was improperly conducted.
Abrahamson and Bradley are the court's liberals. Crooks is a swing vote who has sharply criticized Abrahamson for her lawsuit but also said there should be a transition plan to transfer power to a new chief justice. Crooks had hoped to be the one to serve as chief justice.
Supporting Roggensack are her three fellow conservatives on the court Justices Michael Gableman, David Prosser and Annette Ziegler.
Those four marched Monday into a packed Capitol hearing room to admit the new graduates into the state bar. Roggensack sat in the middle seat that Abrahamson had occupied for nearly two decades.

More childish behavior from the Wisconsin Supreme Court Justices.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
WOW! Those three could sure lighten up a party thrown for Frankenstein and his bride.
They didn’t do it right! They are supposed to meet at the Tilted Kilt at the Clock Tower Hotel and Convention Center in Rockford, Illinois.
If these child-judges are really that unhappy with the way the court is run, they should resign. Otherwise, they should shut their pie holes and do their jobs like grown-ups.
Well, at least those three didn’t run across the southern border and hide in a motel in Illinois - liberals are generally pretty slow, but maybe they’re learning a little something. On second thought, probably not.
Liberal think they should always be in charge.
If they don’t get their way, they try to destroy the institution.
Perusing the ages of the Wisconsin “RAT Justices,” it would appear that the grim reaper will sooner, rather than later, be making “adjustments” in the makeup of the court. Just hope the Walkerites are still in charge when the changes come about. Abrahamson is 81, well past her “sell by”date, Crooks is 77. Bradley is the only one who has a chance of “staying on” for any length of time. Start “saying your prayers,” you good folks in Wisconsin.
Unfortunately Bradley was just reelected to another 10 year term, and she was the one who started this whole fight with her false charges against another judge.
And Shirley looks pretty spry for her age. She looks and acts 10 years younger than her arithmatic age. Knowing that this Constitutional Amendment was coming up in April, I commented to that effect when I watched her in action swearing in Scott Walker in January. At the time, I predicted that she wasn’t going to “go quietly”.
What’s the point...why is it so hard for DEMOCRATS to just COOL IT and enjoy their grandchildren (and often great-grandchildren)?
I will NEVER understand that, unless I’m forced to believe that destroying the country is more important to them.
“And Shirley looks pretty spry for her age. She looks and acts 10 years younger than her arithmatic age. “
But she’s up for re-election in 2019. Do you really think she will try for another ten year term? Would the voters give her one? Those are the salient questions. Crooks looks to be up next year, so he may try again. Are these people “reaffirmed” or can they have opponents in their “re-elections?” Looks like WI is like it is here in CA where they get “appointed for ten years for starters,” and the voters get to decide if they get to keep their seats thereafter. We actually voted out one of our Chief Justices (Rose Bird) who was appointed by Jerry the Fairy during his first two terms. Back then, she was “soft on the death penalty.” Too bad we didn’t vote Brown off the island at the same time.
Yes, it is extremely childish. These so called justices should be removed from office by the public next election. A special proposition should be on the ballot if needed.
FYI Graduates from Marquette Law and UW Mad law are automatically admitted to the Wisconsin Bar upon graduation without taking an examination.

If she’s still vertical and taking nourishment, she’ll try for another term.
Bradley was just reelected, despite her antics trying to get another justice kicked off the court right after he’d been reelected.
A lot of people think Crooks is a conservative because Republicans campaigned for him at his last election. Since then, however, his decsions have not been conservative at all. But, many people haven’t gotten the word.
Yes, indeed! I know somebody who was sworn in ahead of time so she could take a case the very next day.
Well, it IS a Catholic Jesuit College! Those three WOULD be struck by lightening upon entry to Hallowed Ground! *SMIRK*
My Great Grandpa was the Dean of the School of Dentistry at Marquette back in the day. We wouldn’t have wanted those Socialist LibTards there. :)
“Start, ‘saying your prayers,’ you good folks in Wisconsin.”
You don’t know how HARD we’ve been praying! For FIFTY YEARS! We might as well have been wandering around in the desert, LOL!
Finally - a GLIMMER of hope on the horizon with Governor Walker and a Conservative House and Assembly and Supreme Court; we Wisconsin Conservatives are NOTHING if not faithful! :)
“Bradley was just reelected, despite her antics trying to get another justice kicked off the court right after hed been reelected.”
That’s the problem. And we have it here in CA as well. We have judicial “retention” elections and most people don’t even bother to vote that part of their ballot. Or they give the incumbent a “courtesy vote.” A few years back we did manage to vote out a real a$$hole by the name of, wouldn’t you know it, Calhoun (a Republican at that). And you know, on the way home from the polls we stopped at the supermarket and that old bastard cut the line in front of us. I told him it was o.k. because we had both just voted against him. Sometimes, there is a God!
Congratulations on achieving the last word! I just love it!
