Operators of a 63-year-old coal-fired passenger ferry that carries people and cars across Lake Michigan between Wisconsin and Michigan have made the necessary environmental improvements to keep the vintage vessel in service, U.S. regulators announced Thursday.

The 410-foot SS Badger launched in 1952 can carry 600 passengers and 180 vehicles. It's the last coal-fired steamship operating on the Great Lakes and normally runs from May to October. It is scheduled to resume service Friday between Ludington, Michigan, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said inspectors this week confirmed that Lake Michigan Carferry Service Inc. "has taken all the steps necessary to permanently stop the discharge of coal ash" into the lake.

So what causes more environmental havoc? The SS Badger floating around on Lake Michigan or Obama's 747 cruising around the world. I say put a cork in Obama's jet.

I took this ferry from Manitowoc last summer. Very pleasant and interesting voyage. As one loses all sight of land for a couple of hours, it brings home the immensity of the Great Lakes. Anyone fearing that the country may "run out of water" should take this ride, and be reassured.

Time to run a pipe with that water to the west coast. Give us rain again and we promise not to fritter it away.

I’ve taken this, too. Gives one a sense of what can happen when the nor’easter rolls down out of Ontario, and why there are so many shipwrecks. “Nobody knows where the love of God goes...”

“Time to run a pipe with that water to the west coast.”

There is more than enough wager in Lake Tahoe if California wants to use it and it is all down hill.

That’s not going to happen. You should see the process for getting Lake Michigan water just to the other side of the subcontinental divide with a plan for pumping all the used water back to the lake after treatment.

Get those desalinization plants up and running. ...and maybe pump the treated wastewater back to use for irrigation.

Well, one can always wager in Tahoe, too. But the outcome is not certain.

BS. If this tub was anywhere else besides the
northeastern communist block it would never have passed
inspection.
