PHILADELPHIA - A former top U.S. transportation official says federal investigators looking into the fatal train crash in Philadelphia should consider seat belts when they formulate their recommendations.
Ray LaHood was transportation secretary from 2009 to 2013. He told NBC News on Wednesday that he's ridden Amtrak's Northeast Corridor line frequently and has often thought about seat belts.
His comments have rekindled the debate over whether passengers would be safer if they were required to wear seat belts.

Now we’re getting to it......
Trains without seat belts are inherently unsafe.
Well played sir!
“The train was going 106 miles per hour on a curve..seatbelts wouldnt have saved these people, the first two cars were completely destroyed”
Details. We were just starting to make progress on MAKING LIFE MISERABLE for train riders and you have to throw a monkey wrench into it.
Can’t be that many Amish taking the Acela Express to NYC....
Maybe if they had one on the engineer.
One plus would be forcing Joe Biden to wear a seat belt when he rides. He thought it was a good idea to force us into one when driving so F’em.
On a train? You shouldn’t have to. Anything normal that hits a train would not harm it, and it’s on fixed rails so its path is always known.
The only thing that is a danger is a fool conductor.
Sure! It keeps your dead body inside so that it will incinerate properly.
slamming on the brakes in the middle of a turn.... is s surefire invitation to trouble..be it in a car or a bike or a train
at 106 miles and hour it was quote foolish.
his “mind” was clearly not on his JOB
Exactly. If he just did the speed limit he would’ve saved lives. I’m starting to hate politicians.
An ejection seat would be my choice.
If she had been ejected from her vehicle, the risk of dying would have increased substantially.
I’m thinking a governor or speed regulation device would have been cheaper and more effective!
GPS speed control is easy to do on a locomotive. I’m betting the union scum were fighting this.....
Agreed..bubble bags for everyone!!
Well....okay.
Maybe, but would they be cost effective? Doubt it very much. On the other hand, I think that seat belts in school buses are a more logical “requirement”.
The answer to this problem is simple - just require two or maybe, just to be sure, three seat belts. The same principle applies to airplane crashes, 4 seat belts should be Federally required and coloring books. Three flush toilets on all air lines should prevent all fatalities. These common sense remedies, at a mere cost of $400,000,000 would help to elimitate all uncertainty in human life. We must all be grateful that we have a Central Authority to dictate every aspect of our puny, ungrateful lives.
Probably not nearly as much as travelling at the proper speed on that stretch of track would have.
Keeping it under 80 seems like a more feasible solution....
