The engineer driving the Amtrak train that derailed survived the Tuesday night crash will play a key role in the investigation into what happened.
The identity of the engineer has not been publicly released, but authorities said he has already met with investigators.
The train's engineer initially spoke with investigators Tuesday night. He was treated at a hospital and then released and transported to the Philadelphia Police Department. He later declined to provide a formal statement to police and requested a lawyer, which he now has.
ABC News can confirm that they were reportedly meeting with federal accident investigators and other rail personnel this afternoon.

He’s either a doper, a texter, or a Muslim extremist ... just sayin ...
Texting, drunk or fell asleep?
“The NTSB announced that preliminary data indicated that the train’s speed exceeded 100 mph. There is a 50 mph limit at the curve where the train derailed, so the reason why the train was going in excess of twice the limit will be one of the biggest questions facing investigators.
Sumwalt said an initial review of the train’s data recorder shows that the train was going 106 mph three seconds before the recording ended, and that is when the engineer pressed the full emergency brake application. When the recording ended, the train was going 102 mph.”
OK, maybe he's a liberal who stayed up late to watch Letterman ..
Nice headline.
They know nothing.
How hard would it be to put a computerized speed governor on a train?
..sure hope somebody had him pee in a beeker and donate a vial of blood.
He’s lawyer-ed up.
“How hard would it be to put a computerized speed governor on a train?”
For you and I, not hard at all.
For the Dorkbama minions in our gubmit....well, let’s say that a flashlight is high tech to ‘em.
Yet the left is b*tching about how Republicans don’t want to fund Amtrak..so I want to ask any leftist, how would adding more money prevent an Engineer from going 106 miles per hour in a 50 mile per hour zone..either the train failed or the engineer was up to no good..a few years ago a similar derailment happened in Chatsworth, turns out the engineer was texting some teenagers at the time causing him to lose control of the train
Wow, 102 mph derailment. That’s an ‘E’ ticket.
Is there only one engineer at the controls? Isn’t there someone else present with him?
Or automated parking machines at LAX ....
This is the same train that Vice President Joe Biden takes to his home in Wilmington, Delaware. Here is his comment concerning the accident:
Heres the full statement:
Jill and I were deeply saddened to learn of the Amtrak tragedy in Philadelphia last night. We are profoundly grateful for the efforts of the first responders and others who continue to assist those in need.
The victims could have been any one of our parents, children, or someone from one of our communities. Amtrak is like a second family to me, as it is for so many other passengers. For my entire career, Ive made the trip from Wilmington to Washington and back. Ive come to know the conductors, engineers, and other regulars-men and women riding home to kiss their kids goodnight-as we passed the flickering lights of each neighborhood along the way.
Our thoughts are with every person who is grieving right now from this terrible tragedy. As a nation, we pray for the victims and their families.
I would have thought they already had such backups in place.
how can you not realize the train is going TWICE the speed limit?
Fell asleep, passed out drunk, texting, talking, surfing net, prescription drugs, illegal drugs, or just don’t give a shit ?
“Driver 8?”
So they no nothing according to tghe report.
He’s a great argument for computer drivers, and against unions.
