5/13/45: Victory in Europe is less than a week old. [VE Day occurred on May9th.] [Actually, May 8th HJS] Today is a day of prayer in Britain. Churchill will speak later today and review events from his past 5 years as Prime Minister. From London, Edward R. Murrow describes a 1500 plane victory fly-over of London. Himmler, Goering, Hess and other top Nazi leaders are now in custody. Carrier-based aircraft are attacking Japan. Larry LeSueur describes his first-hand impressions of the Russian occupation of Austria. Major Eliot: the Japanese air force has been virtually destroyed. Two military men are asked for their viewpoints on the San Francisco Security Conference. (Their responses sounded very carefully scripted.) President Truman has warned about the terrible consequences for Japan if it doesnt surrender unconditionally. [He obviously had in mind the use of the still secret atomic bomb.] A comparison is made between the reactions of the German people at the end of World Wars I and II. Admiral spot for its post-war refrigerator with Steri-lamp which is as safe as sunshine. PSA encouraging the use of V-mail.

Himmler was still free at this time, traveling with false papers. He was not detained until May 21 and not identified until May 23.
Interesting to note that Trout is anchoring CBS Radio’s flagship newscast at this point, and not Douglas Edwards. Soon after joining the network, Edwards requested an overseas assignment, as a war correspondent.
He finally got his chance in early 1945, as the war in Europe was drawing to a close. In fact, he was partnered with Edward R. Murrow during CBS’s coverage of Germany’s surrender. At one point in the broadcast, Edwards noted the celebrations on this “V-D day in Europe.” Murrow was literally rolling on the floor and it took Doug Edwards a few moments to recover from his blooper.
In hindsight, Edwards was probably right. With the war finally over, it probably was VD day for a lot of folks who were in the mood to celebrate.
I caught that too.
And dead same day as ID’d.
