House Dems to oppose Defense bill

House Republicans and Democrats are headed for a showdown this week over the $612 defense authorization bill.

Democratic leadership is lining up against a bill that has been historically passed with bipartisan support, hours before the House takes up the bill on the floor.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) will whip members of her party against the bill, according to an aide, and other Democratic leaders joined her in opposing it.

"This bill is the wrong bill," House Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (Calif.) said at a press briefing. "We heard a presentation directly from the Department of Defense saying that this bill is the wrong bill," Becerra added.

The House Democratic Caucus was briefed on Wednesday by Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work.

House Armed Services Committee ranking member Adam Smith (D-Wash.) also said he would oppose the bill.

His opposition comes despite the Armed Services Committee passing the bill by a strong bipartisan vote of 60-2, with one Democrat and one Republican in opposition.

The Armed Services Committee has 62 members? No wonder they can’t get things right or done!

From what I've read that's in the bill....and being an active duty member of the military...I would say I agree with the dims. THIS is a bad deal and it appears the GOP is going along with the generals (who are following O's orders)...and SCREWING us.

I hate to side with democrats...but this IS a bad bill. Not that they would do better...but anything is better than this pile of garbage.

Ever notice that Dems become fiscally conservative when it comes to the military?

Yes. About five bucks per aircraft carrier and the F-35 goes for around fifty cents. I can handle that.

This is an end around the limits laid out in the Budget Control Act (Sequestration). By add more to the off budget Overseas Contingencies Operations pot (war funding), the Republicans are able to stay that they have held their ground on budget cuts, including with Defense, while increasing the real numbers beyond what the Obama WH wants.

Did you read the article at all? If you had, you would have seen that they want more money and are fighting sequestration's cap while the war budget is increased. They want the cap removed...and it's the GOP pushing this crappy retirement system change. It's the GOP who is in the wrong here.

"The bill also contains other provisions that have drawn White House objections, including restrictions on its ability to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees, a proposal to overhaul the military retirement system, a rejection of base closures, and proposals to retire weapons systems like the A-10 "Warthog" attack jet."

So the GOP right on GITMO...wrong on other stuff. Both parties are WRONG in different areas. The DIMs are wrong on GITMO and base closures...the GOP is wrong on the retirement pay, the sequestration cap and the warthog.

Pick your poison but let's be honest enough to admit this bill is no friend of the military.

With the cuts, college ROTC grads are being told there’s no room for them so bye.

Why do we need the A10 anyways? I mean, why would we want to keep a highly effective and battle proven close air support attack jet for a military that teaches and preaches combined arms warfare? Wouldn’t we rather have some untested, increasingly over budget, boondoggle that can’t stay out of the repair shop providing CAS?

We can longer trust our selected representatives to do what they swore to do (uphold the Constitution) nor to protect (Trade Bill and this bill) us. Never, since the formation of the republic have so many conspired to bring about its demise.
