This list of Amtrak Accidents shows there have been a lot more than even I thought. I have nothing against rail transportation in theory (although zotted FReeper Willie Green soured me on it since he used to advocate it). In fact my grandfather worked for the P&LE. But any form of transportation is far more efficient and safer when it's controlled solely by private enterprise.

i hear sirens in that direction and an unmarked car cranked up the siren when i was on 95 about 20 minutes ago.

I wouldn't read anything into that this early. In most (all?) cities, that is one of the initial steps in any mass casualty event protocol. Obviously too early to rule out terrorism, but also too early to conclude that it was terrorism.

Not surprised about the CSX freight train in the area. Although Amtrack uses the rails, I was told years ago that the tracks belongs to the freight train companies.

I think...that the pile of rubble..more or less in the center of the image is one of the cars.

i have never been on a train, i have never trusted them, and remember when some guy/engineer/driver was texting, i forgot if it was a train/subway, and he flew off the railings. somewhere in the northeast.

Per scanner descriptions, many pretty serious injuries, lots of serious broken bones.

Yup. That's one reason there are so many delays on Amtrak trains - they may be scheduled to use the rails, but the CSX trains have priority on most of the track Amtrak uses.

the last time I was on a train was 1968 or 1969

it was a far different world in those days!

I remember reading about the moron engineer who was texting before a big wreck but cant remember where it occurred or precisely when.
