The Obama administration is calling for the end to a lifetime ban on blood donations from gay and bisexual men, acknowledging that the policy “is perceived by some as discriminatory.”
The Food and Drug Administration proposed new rules on Tuesday that would roll back the ban, though it still restricts gay men from donating blood if they have had sex with another man within a year.
The proposal still marks the country’s biggest step yet toward changing the 30-year-old prohibition.
Critics of the ban, which was enacted during the national AIDS epidemic in 1983 and last updated in 1992, say it ignores mounds of scientific evidence concluding that blood donations from gay men pose no risk than the greater public if properly screened. The FDA said in its draft rules that the ban has become less effective over time, admitting that “some individuals knowingly donate despite the deferral."
The agency will now collect public comments on the rule for 60 days.
The American Medical Association quickly praised the move, releasing a statement that called it “a step in the right direction to end the lifetime ban that prohibits men who have had sex with men (MSM) from ever donating blood.”

Your points are well-taken, but I’m just showing where the homofascists are being deceitful. If one homosexual is allowed to donate, then their house of lying cards comes down.

I’ve been banned for life since 2002 because I was stationed in Germany in the 1980’s during the Mad Cow scare.

While they may have done a lot to test the blood as being AIDS/HIV-free, I am far from comfortable with this step. We lost a relative, an 11 year old hemophiliac, to tainted blood back in the 90s. Does anyone really know for sure how long the virus might stay dormant?

I remember listening to a talk radio caller back in the late 70s or early 80s claim to be homosexual, and that the only way the disease would get the attention and research funding needed would be if it became common among straights. Therefore he was going to donate blood regularly at as many locations as he could.
It all falls back on the dynamics of changing this policy. If you open the door to a previously banned group of donors, there will be a flood of activists donating blood, just to make a point. Many will construe the modified ban as a full repeal of the ban, or will just be defiant in “victory.” Thus, we will have many, many more instances that could fail in testing. While only 0.01% of 10,000 may be one, 0.01% of 500,000 will be 50. Do we want to play Russian Roulette like that to make some queers happy?

Last time I gave blood, there was a very lengthy questionnaire including the Q about EVER having homosexual relations, traveling to certain countries, etc., etc. I would imagine that question would be rephrased, but it sure doesn’t make me feel comfortable.
IF I or one of my loved ones needed blood, I’d look to direct donations or, if time permitted, pre-stocked the local bank with my own/loved one’s blood. The cost is not a savings, but the worry/danger/risk are well worth it.

Over 20 years ago, my out of state daughter brought her new born baby to visit. After grandma had a chance to hold the baby, I reached for her. My daughter got between us and grasped my shirt and sniffed it first, I was a smoker at the time and she was checking to see if my shirt smelled of smoke.
I told her that if she wanted her daughter to have a grandpa, she would stop that insulting nonsense right now and never do it again. To her credit, she never did it again.
