Um, the article says the object is maybe a mile wide, but the second photo shows the impact of something nearly 1000 miles wide, i.e. having a billion times more volume than the object in question. That’s a little misleading, even for the media.

Especially the 2nd picture. The asteroid is supposed to be one mile, and that would be invisible on the scale that the Earth is drawn at.

Maybe it’s just me, but the asteroid colliding into the earth in that drawing looks a lot bigger than a mile wide.

NASA’s Near Earth Object Programme puts the enormous lump of rock on course to pass within six million miles of Earth on May 14.
The moon is currently around 240,000 miles away.
