For higher education administrators, affirmative action remains a topic of concern. In Fisher v. The University of Texas at Austin, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that race can be a determining factor regarding student admission. Speaking on an educational panel at a conference in Austin, Dr. Gregory Vincent University of Texas Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement bragged about his institutions legal victory. I was actually encouraged by the Supreme Court endorsing this idea that diversity is a compelling interest, said Vincent, adding that the idea that all students benefit from having exposure to students from different backgrounds.
But simply admitting and rejecting applicants on the basis of race is not enough, Vincent avers. If all of the students of color come from poor, first-generation backgrounds, how does that break down stereotypes? According to him, colleges ought to actively seek out students according to an array of non-academic demographics. We need to make sure that these students come from all groups, all socioeconomic backgrounds, declares Vincent in a plea for even greater admissions flexibility.
While Vincent acknowledges that universities are prohibited from using quotas he is committed to accepting underrepresented minority students. I think that one of the strongest parts of our case is that we were able to demonstrate how race was truly just one factor among many, boasts Vincent. Candidly, the bigger issue is how do we increase the number of students who are in that holistic admissions pool, and getting more of those students there and making them more competitive once theyre in that pool, so thats where the challenge is.
Vincent also went on the offensive against fraternal organizations: I think Greek life is a real challenge on our campuses
it is something that we will have to pay significant attention to. We are going to have to take that on. But wont that cut down on the diversity?
Nephew accepted there. He went to A&M.
At the risk of being called racist, blacks as a whole are not as smart as white people. They will necessarily have to lower the standard to meet their quota of blacks. And they will also probably pressure the professors to lower their standards to pass them, too.
Blah, blah, blah. They lost on quotas, so they are trying every rationalization imaginable to circumvent that and figure out some sort of admission system of “non-quota” quotas.
Will never send any more money to my alma mater.
Let’s all p*ss on White kids who work hard and qualify for prime spots in institutions of higher education, so we can admit Blacks who rely on a Free Pass to get everything these days.
Bull. Sh*t.
White Dudes rule!
diversity is a compelling interest
Why? Simple question. What concrete societal value does “diversity” bring?
It’s worse for Asians. In some universities the Asians have to score 120% of what “white” kids score,
while “blacks” can score about 70% and be admitted.
You’re absolutely right.
Excellent point.
Will someone PLEASE tell me how this is NOT racial discrimination?
In a more civilized time, we simply accepted / hired / promoted / elected the most qualified individual.
Diversity is NOT a strength, when people see that some are favored and some are not. Balkanization follows like day follows night.
The left will sincerely argue that a meritocracy is “racist” because the standards for what constitutes “merit” are biased by the race in power.
I’m not sure about the intelligence level, but the cultural standard in place in many black societal groups against academic achievement is certainly a factor. An innately intelligent person who is shamed or bullied into disregarding their own learning cannot survive a rigorous academic environment.
I’ll not call you racist, but I will tell you that the assertion on intelligence is a lot harder to prove in any scientific manner - and the discouraging of learning is an easy diagnosis that can be based on simple observation.
So quantifiable admission metrics are now racist?
Of course the left will make that argument, even if it’s completely false. Facts don’t matter, the overriding agenda does.
Oy.
You can be guaranteed that whatever you view as good right and “normal”,
the left will denounce as bad.
Just repeating what information is available to anyone who looks.
Also, I’d REALLY like to challenge a leftist to come up with a set of standards that will provide a successful society that AREN’T based on “white” (ie, Western/Christian) values.
IE, show us the test that isn’t “culturally biased”,
or better yet, one that is “fair” to the culture of “African-Americans”.
Black privelege.
You know the white leftists are pissed as hell that Asians are gumming up the works and throwing water on the whole stupid argument of racial inequality in America’s universities.
I’m old enough to remember when the big national push was for integration and a color blind society.
Now the big push is to go back to “separate but equal” so blacks kids don’t have to suffer the same requirements placed on non-black students.
Of course, this leads to insular societies doomed to poverty and squalor, but hey. At least the popular “black culture” is maintained.
