Moscow (AFP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday defended the infamous pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union that agreed to divide up eastern Europe during a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
On August 23, 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union agreed to carve up eastern Europe between them in a secret clause of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact on non-aggression. "When the USSR realised that it was left facing Hitler's Germany alone, it took steps so as to not permit a direct collision and this Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was signed," Putin said at a news conference in response to a question from a journalist.
He was asked to respond to comments by Russia's outspoken culture minister Vladimir Medinsky praising the pact as a triumph of Joseph Stalin's diplomacy. "In this sense I share the opinion of our culture minister that this pact had significance for ensuring the security of the USSR," Putin said.
He stressed that the Soviet Union had been pushed to sign the pact after the earlier 1938 Munich agreement signed by Britain, France and Italy with Adolf Hitler ended hope of a united front against the Nazis. The pact came after the USSR made "numerous efforts to create an anti-Fascist bloc in Europe" that ended in failure, he said.
Putin had in the past condemned the pact as unethical. "Today we understand that any form of agreement with the Nazi regime was unacceptable from the moral point of view and had no chance of being realised," Putin wrote in a 2009 article in a Polish daily on the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II...

Ezekiel 38:1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying , 2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog [Russian Leader], the land of Magog [Southern Russia], the chief prince of Meshech [Moscow Area] and Tubal [Tobolsk Russia], and prophesy against him, 3 And say , Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: 4 And I will turn thee back , and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth , and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: 5 Persia [Iran], Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: 6 Gomer [Possibly Germany], and all his bands; the house of Togarmah [Turkey] of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee. 7 Be thou prepared , and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them. 8 After many days thou shalt be visited : in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them...
This guy does far too much talking about far too many things that don’t improve the lives of his citizens.
He wants to be seen as a world statesman. Good luck with that.
So does Obama and look how that turned out.
Wing nuts never become the heros they think they deserve to be.
For some strange reason, the public sees them differently.
Start with improving the lives of your people Vlad. And that starts with bringing their sons home alive, when nobody has attacked you.
I will always wonder what would have happened and the French had their way, resulting in France and England declaring war on the USSR while fighting Germany as well.
The truth is, Nazism and Communism are more alike than different...
Putin is correct on both counts.
At that time, it was a “Diplomatic Coup” for Stalin, and the “Secret Protocol” to the agreement stated that Germany had no interests in preventing the Soviets from recovering lands lost at the end of WW1, (which was only 20 years before), namely the Baltic States (including Finland) and Bessarabia.
It meant that Stalin could both put down the unrest in the stans, and acquire lost territories, without fear of the Germans supporting them, or attacking.
Of course, we know now what actually happened, that Hitler didn’t keep his word.

The one thing that Putin does is actually ANSWER questions that are out to him, unlike Obama, who vamps and goes off-topic when asked a difficult question.
That Merkel/Putin Presser lasted well over two hours.
It would be a lot better if he didn’t turn into a member of the Adam’s family when responding.
Two hours. I’m shocked he’d let them go before six hours.
Even Fidel does better than two hours.
I thought Adolph Hitler was Chancellor of Germany when that pact was made...
Both are philosophies of the totalitarian left.
Putin’s mistake here. A dressed up pig is still a pig. Now I do think there is blame to go around in the area of appeasing Hitler. But Stalin was an evil force all his own. The Russian people turned out to be heroes in spite of their evil leader.
Did Stalin have a good motive or two from time to time? Probably. But he was still a very evil and oppressive ruler, just of a different sort than Hitler. There is no dressing him up to make him pretty. This is just turning him into one of those cross-dressers where you KNOW the “woman” is really a man.
I heard a prophesy in 1984, which also explained this scripture in Eze 38; it also included China in the list of countries - and being as how China and Russia are now best friends .. the scripture says “... from the north ...” - which would most likely include China.
So, maybe a precursor to that event will be Isaiah 17:1 - Woe to Damascus, it has been taken away from being a city, it has become a ruinous heap. If that scripture is fulfilled by Israel .. it certainly would be possible for Eze 38 to be enacted.
On my birthday, I sat by my radio and listened to Israel become a nation. I’ve felt connected ever since.
If you really want to read an interesting account of how the deal came about, read Goebbels Diary entries for that period.
Hitler was DESPERATE to avoid a two-front war, and Stalin knew it - and he played the Nazis like an angler with a fish.
The description is quite vivid - Hitler and his pals sitting in Berlin, congratulating themselves on getting a deal with Stalin - when suddenly a messenger walks in, Molotov on the phone, with one extra small demand, some Baltic port. Irritated, Hitler agrees to let Stalin have it.
Then they settle down, it’s finally done. Except, a few hours later, another phone call from Molotov, another small demand.
This went on several times, and from the description Goebbels gave, you can see the legendary Fuhrer temper building.
And maybe, a future desire to stick it back to Stalin?
You REALLY need to see this if you haven’t already
