Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey likes to point out how he has made big cuts to state spending. But when it comes to using his allowance money as governor, he appears happy to be a high roller.
Records obtained by New Jersey Watchdog show that Mr. Christie spent more than $360,000 of his state allowance during his first five years in office, with 80 percent of that going toward food, drinks and desserts. He receives an annual allowance of $95,000, on top of his salary of $175,000, to be used for entertaining and hosting official receptions.

Mr. Christie also spent over $100,000 on groceries and alcohol at retail stores such as Wegmans Food Market and ShopRite, where his bills averaged more than $1,000 per spree. Whether he was stocking his personal pantry or making the purchases to cater official events was unclear from the records, but a spokesman said such expenses typically go toward receptions and state functions.

Mr. Christies grocery bills dropped off drastically, according to New Jersey Watchdogs analysis, in 2013 after the governor had a surgical procedure to help him lose weight.

Hard to believe.
He doesn't look like he ate more than $250,000 worth himself.
Now, if the NY Times would just do that kind of scrutiny of Mr. & Mrs. Obama. Nah...wrong party.
I don’t recall the Times having a problem when Pelosi spent that much to stock her US jumbo jet with booze to drink on her weekly personal trips to San Fran all on the taxpayer dime.
Must be nice to have no marketable skill and land a job with a $175,000 payday and a $95,000 allowance for whatever.
Reading from the article, ‘catered events for state receptions and special events, which the report said was more consistent with the stated purpose of the allowance.
Just another piece to attack.
The original piece:
The selective indignation of the nyt toward the non-progressives is both scandalous and offensive.
As is rightly pointed out above, these types of corrupt excesses are much more likely to be the business-as-usual for the Dems.
.
Umm, no Christie-Kreme fan here but wouldn't "entertaining and hosting official receptions" require that money be spent on food, drinks, and deserts? If one reads the article he basically spent the money on exactly what it was designated for. The string of Rats before him put that allowance into law but now that a republican is in charge the NYT acts as though using is it somehow nefarious. They go so far as to insinuate that he is buying his personal groceries with the money (I'm sure some passive aggressive sissy at the NYT thinks it's a clever fat joke) with absolutely no proof.
So, he was budgeted to have the money to spend on food and drink for State functions. He spent the money on food and drink for State functions. And now there is a story about how he followed the law?
Not a big fan of Christie, but maybe the story here shouldn’t be about how he followed the law, but more why the State authorizes this kind of expenditure.

Whatever the law is, obey it. If the law sucks and wastes taxpayer money, change the law and then obey that.
And with expenses of $360,000, over five years, averages out to $72,000 per year. Yet the Budget is $95,000. So he’s actually coming in under budget.
If the Times wanted to have a meaningful comparison, compare the expenses of Jon Corzine with Chris Christie.
Another “electable” RINO
And it looks he consumed most of it.
Can’t stand Christie, but isn’t is interesting that we never see such articles in the NYT about the Wookie’s extravagant spending?
If you remember this pales in comparison to pelosi’s alcohol bill to the taxpayers.

And only 80 percent was spent on food and beverage - so that’s 288,000.
Someone should clue the NYT in to the fact that Crisco was never going to be a serious contender for the nomination so they can cease and desist with the hit pieces already.
