At 16, A Monster Got Her Pregnant. 77 Years Later, She Meets The Daughter She Gave Away

In 1928, 16-year-old Minka Disbrow was on a picnic in the woods when she was assaulted and raped. Suddenly, this innocent farm girl was pregnant and terrified. The baby was secretly born, named Betty Jane, and placed for adoption.

For decades, Minka wrote letters trying to receive updates on her daughter. She kept loving and praying for Betty Jane, even though she never thought they’d meet again.

Nearly 80 years later, Minka whispered a prayer: “Lord, I’d like to see Betty Jane before I die. I promise I won’t bother her or interrupt her life. I just want to lay eyes on her.” Unbeknownst to Minka, a judge was releasing the sealed adoption records to her 77-year-old daughter. Soon, Minka’s phone would ring with the news she’d been secretly hoping for.

It’s incredibly moving. I read the book several years ago and it moves me to this day. The story got brought up again because of Mother’s Day. Truly amazing women and story.

The dates are confusing. Is this an old story? in 1928 she was on a picnic. She was 16 years old. She was raped and had a baby. That would mean that the mother would have been born in 1912 - and would now be 103 years old.

Again, I am wondering if this is an old story.

My father was born out of wedlock and put up for adoption. All I know about his biological mother is a name. I know nothing about his biological father; the name was blackened out on his adoption certificate.

One of my buds in HS was an orphan. Basically he was razzed about it non stop and he took it like a pro. He hated them for giving him up. He now works as a tech officer in Silicon Valley. After pretty much all his GF’s asked if he wanted to look for them, he said F no, but that instinct for family finally caught up to him and found them eventually.

The “push” came after he visited his orphanage and donated. The kids pretty much told him they owe it to them for looking for his parents as they had none.

It’s an older story that was updated and run again for Mother’s Day this weekend. Minka died a year ago at 102. They were reunited when she was 94.

The Waiting has 298 320 consumer reviews on Amazon. 298 5-star and 19 4-star. The overall reviews are really strong.

1 3-star (One of the most touching stories I have ever read. One that makes me cry has to be good. I highly recommend it. So well written.)

1 2-star (”The writing is good but the story and outcome are just too predictable. I skimmed through the last two hundred pages)

1 1-star (”It is so good to have a happy ending after so many years. A very uplifting story. I am pleased to have read this true experience.”

Actually there were places where it was legal.

It depended on what state you were in.
