SAN DIEGO -- Imagine the following pep talk that a young Ted Cruz might have gotten from his father, Rafael, about 35 years ago.
"My son, I was tortured in a jail cell in Cuba, but I managed to come to the United States and build a life so that you could live your dreams. I grew up speaking Spanish, but I made sure you spoke English so you could go far. If you study hard, you can attend great universities. You can clerk for the chief justice of the Supreme Court, become a great trial lawyer and argue nine cases before the high court, get elected to the U.S. Senate, and someday run for president.
"Then, after all the family's efforts and sacrifices, one day, you can go on an interview program and be asked by a smug and clueless white journalist if you're authentically Cuban."
Watching Mark Halperin of Bloomberg Politics interview Cruz recently, I wasn't just uncomfortable. I was actually nauseated.
As a journalist, I felt embarrassed for Halperin. As a Hispanic, I felt like I was watching a college fraternity have fun with racial stereotypes, like when staging a "border party" where people show up in serapes and fake mustaches. And as someone who doesn't adhere to a party line to the point where I've been accused of being a "coconut" (white on the inside, brown on the outside), I was furious enough to -- as Sarah Palin once said approvingly about Cruz -- chew barbed wire and spit out rust.
The online interview show that Halperin co-hosts on BloombergPolitics.com is called "With All Due Respect." But there was nothing respectful about the line of questioning. It started off innocently enough with Halperin asking the 2016 GOP presidential candidate about whether he thinks Hispanics will vote for

Ted Cruz Ping! The media are the enemy.
That includes FOX news.
Ruben was right. Halperin wanted Cruz to prove he was a “real” Hispanic. You’re going to see a lot of that in the upcoming year where the media is going to do gotcha journalism on all of the Republican candidates.
Or he could "ax" Ben Carson if he likes watermelon and collard greens, or who his favorite rapper is.
Some on FOX are GOP supporters...Doh!....oh wait, I see what you mean.
Megan is Hot though! I usually tune in for her.
My wife is jealous.
Yes it does include FNC; they try to be subtle about it, but they FAIL!
.
Absolutely right, FRiend! That channel is filled with vile, disgusting anti-American leftists (Shep, Geraldo, Juan, O'Reily, Fatso Beckel...) and members of queer cults (Greta). That's why a number of FReeper Patriots have started calling it Faux "News" since it's essentially a pro-muzzie outlet. That's been even more apparent over the past few days.
The only reliable sources for truth, news and informed opinion are, of course, Free Republic and the Sarah Palin Channel.
He PROVED that on the contrary, he is in the business to influence viewers' conclusions. He, like all the rest, informs people about some things, and keeps them ignorant about other things, carefully presenting a limited context of selected reports chosen to lead viewers to "decide" exactly what FOX intends. No matter what one thought of Thompson, in newsworthy terms, here was a story of genuine interest and significance in Thompson's swift rise, yet they pretended it simply wasn't happening.
They're doing the SAME THING TO CRUZ.
FOX news is as manipulative and devious in favor of the left as CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, and all the rest of the leftist MSM. FOX just goes about it differently, that's all. The sooner conservatives and Republicans wake up to this truth, the better.
The media are distinguishing between “white Hispanics” and I don’t know authentic Hispanics. This cuts two ways. We Republicans don’t have much to lose with respect to Hispanics who don’t speak English. (it’s convenient to call them “first generation,” although that is an over- generalization.) I suppose they aren’t even legally able to vote. Bilingual or second generation, maybe we could get some of their votes. Maybe. Perhaps Marco Rubio can. Both of his parents are Cuban. He’s bilingual and he married within the community (a Colombian). He’s also has a darker complexion. But, I am thinking, not really. In any case, we’ll see. As for Ted Cruz. No. He’s not going to appeal to bilingual or second generation Hispanics. So, let’s move to English-only, second generation Hispanics. It’s about time they start thinking of themselves as Hispanic. Like me. I don’t thinking of myself as Italian-American. Sure, my grandfather came from Italy. My mother was bilingual. And, I am proud of the Italian contribution to western Civilization and to the U.S. But, I am proud of the contribution of all the people of this country to this country. And, I think of myself as sharing in the entire heritage of this country. So, Ted Cruz by being an American could help us say to English only, second generation Hispanics, you too are Americans. So, if your values are Republican values, you should vote Republican.
If Cruz really wanted to prove he was Cuban he would have driven to the show in a '56 De Soto.
Navarette is a La Raza cabron.
You are right about Naverette. He is an extreme leftist. I normally avoid anything he writes because I don’t want to puke. This time I am pleasantly surprised.
And OReilly FNCs showcase conservative who never did get the hang of that conservative thing.
The family eventually settled in Vermont, and my grandfather met a lovely girl from Barre. He insisted that everyone in the household speak English (the horror!).
Since we don't speak Spanish that well, I guess by Mark Halperin's standards my father, and by extension, I, am not authentically Hispanic?
Seriously, Walker is coming on most like Reagan of the bunch. His record as governor is highly reminiscent of Reagan's governorship. Now if he can campaign as RR did- no attacking the others and stay forcefully optimistic with a sense of humor...
