How beliefs about what makes us happy have changed in the last 80 years.
Eighty years ago the top three things people thought were most important for happiness were security, knowledge and religion.
By 2014 only security was still in the top three, and the other two spots had changed to good humour and leisure.
Meanwhile religion had dropped to tenth, and last place.
The results come from two surveys carried out almost 80 years apart.

Here some old advice from Jimmy Soul: “If you wanna be happy
all of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife.”
This works for some, not for others.
My wife is hot as an Alabama August. 13 years and more in love today than the day we married.
I married a 5 who was kind, faithful and loved children even more than the act of conceiving them. She still has skin like a 30 year old, silky hair like a 20 year old and is at least an 8 now. Best of all, we have three wonderful daughter who've given us four beautiful grandchildren (2 of each), so far.
What you look like up to age 30 is mostly due to the luck of your gene pool. What you look like after 30 is mostly due to how you live your life.
Sex, Drugs & Rock-n-Roll! Duh. ;)
The needs are the same as they’ve ever been; it’s manifestly obvious to anyone with eyes that no one is happy these days.
You’ve been blessed by meeting the right woman, and knowing she was for you. Beauty is shown in many ways throughout life.
Congrats on finding a keeper Vigilanteman!
I’ve always known I was born in the wrong time.
I be happy as can be. Gots me EBT, Obamaphone, and Obamacare. Keep Obama in president. You know!
Sarcasm, right?
Things that make a happy life, my friend, are these:
Wealth inherited, not got through labor,
A productive field, a hearth ever-burning,
Never to be involved in lawsuits, a rarely worn business suit,
equal friends agreeing ever.
Health of body, peace of mind, sleep that make the nights seem brief,
Wise simplicity, no fancy fare,
Nights not drunken, yet free from care,
Wish to be what you are, and nothing more.
Neither fear your last day nor wish for it.
— Martial, Epigrams XLVII
But what makes a pretty woman happy?
Speaking for myself (blush):
Knowledge, that old-fashioned concept. I think many other FReepers are knowledge freaks too.
/Sarc for those who need it
