I watched a professor give a speech that was recorded and posted on youtube stating the crusades were a defensive move by Christians to halt the forced spread of Islam. At the time the Muslims were attacking Christians in Spain, Byzantine, France and Greece forcing them to convert to Islam or die. This is rarely the position of the mainstream but he had a lot of facts to back it up.
