Head teachers are warning that schools are having to act like "mini-welfare states" in having to provide food, spare uniform and even to wash clothes and provide showers for some pupils.

The National Association of Head Teachers says such welfare support is costing £43.5m from school budgets. Heads' leader Russell Hobby said it was a "hidden national scandal".

A Conservative spokesman said "the number of children living in poverty has fallen by 300,000".

The warning from members of the NAHT, as they gather for their annual conference in Liverpool, is that schools are having to step in with welfare support for pupils, either because of poverty or dysfunctional families.

The union's report, based on responses from more than 2,000 head teachers in England, found examples of schools supplying food, clothes, PE kit, headlice treatment, transport costs and equipment for lessons.

There were schools which now had facilities for washing clothes and providing showers for pupils.

We have no expectations whatsoever from the “parents” of our welfare state; if they received their financial support as the child support that it is there would be more accountability.

And backon this side of the bond many of our urban schools are feeding breakfast and lunch, and offering dinner with an extended day/study hall/after school programs.

When do we break ground for dormitories?

"Head teachers are warning that schools are having to act like "mini-welfare states" in having to provide food, spare uniform and even to wash clothes and provide showers for some pupils."

Soon the teachers will have to provide instructions on how to walk upright.

billions? it has to be extremely high. The mind boggling part is when guns or equipment used to support terrorism are supported by state welfare.
But I forget, guns aren’t allowed in most of Europe. Some piece of paper says so.

Head teachers here do all they can to get students enrolled in school breakfast, lunch and dinner programs. The more students they have on the dole, the more state and federal funds they receive.

That is exactly what is going on here. Enroll them in these school Welfare programs, get more money, and then whine and bitch that they need even more to deal with the “crisis.” When you hear a school or other government bureaucracy talk about a “crisis”, its always a code word for “gimme more money.”

you see the message? the conservatives are lying and we need moar, we want moar free sh**

now the school should wash your clothes...

no where is it asked has all the free stuff already delivered...has it worked? because the answer is no. the answer will and always has been no.

always the same with libs/socialists...it will be fine tomorrow when you give us this.

the liberal orgasm is always tomorrow (might account for the continual frustration they have)...or the old joke give me a 68 (think 69 except -1), you give me one and i will owe you one, which is what they do to taxpayers every day...
