The state House agreed Tuesday night to pull back on North Carolina's long-standing ban on hunting with guns on Sundays, replacing it with legislation containing exceptions but giving counties the ability to ban it again locally in a couple of years.

The House voted 83-35 for legislation that would allow hunting with a firearm on the day traditionally reserved for church on private land with the owner's written permission. The bill now goes to the Senate.

There would be limits. Sunday hunting of this kind would still be banned in Wake and Mecklenburg counties, and anywhere else within 500 yards of a church and nearby homes. And other counties could pass their own Sunday hunting prohibitions starting in October 2017. Hunting of migratory birds and deer while using dogs to chase them also would be unlawful.

North Carolina is one of 11 states that restrict Sunday hunting. The Wildlife Resources Commission agreed in 2009 to allow Sunday bow hunting.

So, in NC one can only hold church services on Sunday, on private land, with written permission from said private land owner?

Believe it or not the Sunday blue laws existed here NY till only a decade or so ago. No alcohol could be sold before noon on Sunday and hunting was banned on Sunday in the western half of the state . Deer season always started on a Monday and opening day was a huge day for sick day call ins and hooky from school. opening day is Saturday now and you can hunt Sunday too. This has saved miilions in business losses.

That being said I miss monday opening day. Much quieter in the woods...less people ...at least in my area

I live in NC and I've never understood the disconnect between hunting and church.
Or why hunting on Sunday was illegal. On what basis? And that l'il rule effectively cuts a Monday-Friday workin slob's hunting days in half. We still do a lot of shooting on Sunday afternoons.
Not sure why they're singling out the dog hunters, either. What's the difference? IMWK. d:^)

We have a Sunday hunting ban in my state. Sunday is the day I typically went for a four or five mile hike in the woods. I’ve hiked other days and been shot at more than once. I Shouted to one jackass that I’ll be happy to shoot back. And yes, I was wearing orange.

I’m grateful that there are hunters to take out the way-too-common white tail deer but one day off in seven when one can walk without drawing fire doesn’t seem unreasonable. I’ll bet every seasoned hunter knows someone he will no longer hunt with because the guy is too much of a careless jerk. That’s the guy I worry about.
