With massive violence spreading in Baltimore on Monday, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is under fire for a statement she made over the weekend indicating that she ordered the city's police to give people the "space" to destroy property.
"I've made it very clear that I work with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech," Rawlings-Blake said in a press conference.
"It's a very delicate balancing act, because, while we tried to make sure that they were protected from the cars and the other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well. And we worked very hard to keep that balance and to put ourselves in the best position to deescalate, and that's what you saw."
How could a mayor actually say she asked police to allow people to destroy property?
According to her office, her statement didn't quite come out the way she intended it to.

Heard yesterday on radio that she had been appointed, after then mayor Sheila Dixon was forced to resign for an embezzlement charge in early 2010, or some such.
Yo arse aint GOIN out there and doin no Lootin FOO!!
NOW GO TO YO ROOM!!
Marie Harf is deeply concerned that she won’t be a walkoff winner of the Stupidest Public Statement of the Year Award.
I don’t know what else anyone can expect with Liberal ‘leadership’
I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt in her intent.
I really understand what she meant,
but I’d say she’s incompetent.
She meant that when you give space for free speech,
you’re also allowing space for those who have malintent.
But, as you said, she’s in a position above her competence,
so she misstated it and inadvertently gave “permission”.
She coo.
Councilwoman Neresse Campbell got elected.
The most ridiculous media thing I saw was Dr. Phil on FOXS News this morning.
These thugs won't listen to Al Sharpton, they listen to other hip-hop thugs inciting this very behavior.
I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt unless they give me reason not to. In watching what the mayor said, I believe that her INTENT was to imply that it was unfortunate that in giving space to people to protest peacefully, they also left space open that non-peaceful people took advantage of and used it to commit mayhem. I think the general tone of her remarks at that time is consistent with that meaning, but that it didn’t quite come across the way she intended it to.
That said, if she were a Republican white male, the media would hammer him incessantly over saying something like that, no matter what his intent was.
“...According to her office, her statement didn’t quite come out the way she intended it to....”
Well, a gaffe like this costs citizens a LOT of damage and maybe lives. ANYONE who makes such gaffes should NOT be in office.
Never heard the end of it from the left on “Mission Accomplished”.
You got your job just because of what you look like. You are no more fit to be mayor than my dog. Actually my dog would be a better mayor.
Nerese was prettier and smarter.
Most of those attending do not live in the city.
She sounds as dumb as a box of rocks.
I agree.
I think most of us have been guilty of not articulating ourselves properly at one time or another.
Exactly! Makes me so mad that Liberals have done this to our country. Libs act on their agenda, not common sense.
The Class Action Civil Lawsuit is going to be EPIC....
She has already sealed it, and confirmed her PERSONAL Civil Liability with those words.
Anyone harmed in any way by the rioting now has a Civil Claim against the city.
This is going to cost the City of Baltimore 10’s of millions of dollars.
So far it sounds like Obama’s only involvement is to warn the governor to make sure that the National Guard uses “restraint.” The local authorities in Baltimore are black Democrats. How is the media going to pin the blame on the white Republican governor?
If the US could be compared to a ship and its leadership compared to Liberal policies.... the ship would certainly be at the bottom by now.
