Fear in Jordan: Arabs Abandoned Us, We Can Rely Only on Israel
INN ^ | 4/27/2015 | Hillel Fendel

A Jordanian columnist is extremely concerned that Arab countries have turned their backs on the kingdom, pushing it straight into Israel's lap.

In the April 12 edition of the Jordanian daily Al-Dustour, columnist Maher Abu Tair sheds light on what he calls the "sad" contemporary situation in which the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan finds itself.

He accuses Arab countries of turning their backs on Jordan and abandoning it, pushing Jordan totally into Israel's economic and political lap. Abu Tair calls strongly for a major change that will enable Jordan to find an alternative to relying on Israel.

-snip-

"Jordan has grown weak to the point of total reliance on Israel, as part of which Israel will sell us the Palestinian natural gas [it has] stolen as an alternative to the Egyptian natural gas that is denied [to us] by the mujahideen [i.e. jihadists] of the [Sinai] desert.

"[Also as part of this reliance, Jordan and Israel have agreed on] the massive Two Seas Canal project and [the issue of] the Aqaba Airport [referring to the issue of the Ramon Airport that Israel is building near Eilat]. In the past, Jordan threatened to oppose [the building of the Israeli airport] but now it has withdrawn its objection on the condition that takeoffs and landings be coordinated [with the Aqaba Airport]...

"The naked truth is that Jordan no longer has any Arab allies, and today its only ally against the entire Arab east is Israel. If the Arabs had wanted a strong Jordan that did not throw itself at Israel, they would not have abandoned it economically and besieged it politically to the point that its foreign policy became fickle. [Nowadays] we go to bed supporting Tehran and wake up opposing it in Yemen."

TL;DR: Israel is Jordan's only reliable ally, and they're not too happy about it.

Yeah, how about a free fall into the abyss. That would be a good alternative ... idiot.

Declare some reasonable sized part of Western Jordan to be the "State of Palestine" and recognize the State of Israel's right to existence in perpetuity.

Problem solved.

Israel comes to the aid of the needy around the world, but you’d never know it from reading the world’s immoral press. Israel was right on the scene in Nepal with its advanced rescue crews and equipment. Did your news sources mention that. The New York Times listed countries that offered money and/or assistance. Not a word about Israel’s being a key rescuer and saver of lives. Israel was likewise first on the scene with surgical field stations and aid in Haiti after its earthquake, in after the tidal wave in Thailand etc, etc, etc.

Laziness and lack of vision.

If they had a nuclear weapons program and declared their intent to destroy Israel, Obama would have given them billions in foreign aid plus USA military protection.

Middle Eastern history is not my strong point. (Which means I know more than the average history major at a State funded Liberal Arts College.) So correct me if I'm off base here -

Isn't Jordan where most of those "Palestinians" were living before the formation of the State of Israel? My impression was that they didn't give a rat's patoot about that land until the Israelis made it lush and productive.

Again, I'll gladly accept correction if my impressions are in error.

A very well researched history on the subject and one that should be a must read for anyone who wants to become educated about this history should definitely read From Time Immemorial, by Joan Peters. Highly recommend!

If I may offer a comment relevant to the question...

Approximately 93% of what is Israel today was Jewish owned property at the time of Israel's creation in 1948. The wealthier land-owning Arabs readily sold their holdings to the Jews, who paid above market prices.

Maybe I stated that poorly.

I thought that the land along the Jordan River, both East and West Banks was where the “Palestinians” were living at the time.

Palestine was divided into two pieces. A sliver was given to the jewish palestinians and the remainder given to the arab palestinians.

The jewish sliver was renamed Israel. The arab remainder was renamed Jordan.

Jordanians are mostly palestinian by definition. The royals are from further south; they were originally the kings of arabia in Mecca before they were pushed out by the Saud family. They were given Jordan as a consolation prize by the British.

I wasn't correcting you. Just adding a little known fact to the conversation.

Prior to the creation of Israel, Jordan was known as Trans-Jordan because it extended to both banks of the Jordan. So, you're probably right about the prior location of those people now known as Palestinians.

The Obama administration has all but declared Israel as our enemy. Since the media is beholden to the administration, you won't see or hear any stories favorable to Israel.

I just wish there was a way for ordinary Americans to let Israel know that we ordinary folks love and support Israel.
