For me, it was a sad day in October 1965 when I turned in my M-14 and was issued a Colt XM16e1.

Did the Army sell, give-away or destroy the millions of M-16A1s it had when I was in?

The M4 short barrel configuration of the M-16 is fundamentally flawed due to the short barrel and the short gas system.

There s nothing really wrong with the full sized M-16 if you buy into the use of 5.56 NATO ammunition.

I was reading an article while waiting in my Dr.’s office a few days ago. It was about the Beretta M9 magazines failing in the Middle East. The article was in a defense dept. magazine or maybe one intended for contractors.

The fascinating thing to me is that Beretta told the Army not to use parkerized magazines as they retain sand. The Army went ahead anyway and sure enough they jammed. Also the quality was not top notch and were produced by a third party.

I wonder if the problems with the M4 could be something similar.

--Retired Army Maj. Gen. Robert Scales, an artillery officer and decorated Vietnam combatant, is one of the M4's most vocal critics. He also believes the 5.56 mm M855A1 ammunition — an environmentally sensitive, or "green," round — is wrong for the gun.--

In 1962 the Advanced Research Projects Agency (The D was added later) was conducting tests of the Colt AR-15 (not yet the M-16) in South Vietnam. I was visiting Saigon from my home base in Thailand. Another Air Force officer and I were scheduled to visit a site "up country" and were given a couple of AR-15s because we had to carry some kind of weapon. I had never fired one, and if called upon to defend myself with it, I'm not sure how I'd have managed. However, we got to our destination, collected the data we came for, and made it back to Saigon with no problems.

Since returning to the US I have over the years bought and sold AR-15 semi-autos. Not my favorite gun, but easier to carry than an M-14.

I do not like the light-weight carbine barrel, although my daughter prefers it. I'm willing to carry the heavier barrel, that doesn't heat up so quickly.

My brother, a Marine officer, carried an M-16 throughout his tour in Vietnam. His response to the complaints was that you had to keep the gun clean. If you did, it worked fine.

"At a recent Capitol Hill hearing, an Army general acknowledged that the M4's magazine has been responsible for the gun jamming during firefights."

So instead of buying magazines that work from another vendor they're going to redesign the rifle? Seriously?

"The Army has ordered that soldiers may use only government-issued magazines with their M4 carbines, a move that effectively bans one of the most dependable and widely used commercial-made magazines on today’s battlefield."

Dump that crappy green tip round and issue BTHP in 62 grain. Or say to hell with The Hague Convention and issue soft point spitzer rounds. Either of those stop bad guys good.

“A Green Beret said he takes the extraordinary step of rebuilding his M4A1 on the battlefield by using components from other gunmakers — technically a violation of Army regulations.”

Absolutely extraordinary, I can’t believe one of our countries elite soldiers would ever sink to that level.

Simple solution to M4 reliability and lethality problems: 1) go to gas piston drive like the HK416 and 2) change to 6.8 SPC caliber. Problems solved.

Bonus: Legacy 5.56 NATO caliber M16 and M4 rifles are easily updated. Ditto for M249 SAW and Mk 46 Mod 0 and 1 LMG. Parts required are: 1) 6.8 SPC barrel assembly (with gas piston drive), 2) gas drive bolt carrier and bolt in 6.8 SPC, 3) 6.8 SPC steel or polymer magazines in 6.8 SPC, and 4) modify 5.56 NATO M27 links to take 6.8 SPC cases.

Army seeks gun industry help on M4 carbine in tacit admission of rifle’s flaws

So boys and girls, don't ever try to improve something because you'll be admitting it's flawed. Just dig in and claim it's perfect.

The Russian 5.45 x 39 appears to be a superior weapon and the rounds are better than the 5.56.
