Scott Walker, Over the Target, Taking Flak
National Review ^ | April 21, 2015 | Rich Lowry

Posted on 04/21/2015 10:28:03 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

As I noted a week or so ago, Scott Walker has begun to talk about immigration in terms of American wages, the only candidate in the GOP field to do so. He reinforced the message on the Glenn Beck show the other day (note the Jeff Sessions name-check):

In terms of legal immigration, how we need to approach that going forward is saying — the next president and the next congress need to make decisions about a legal immigration system that’s based on, first and foremost, on protecting American workers and American wages, because the more I’ve talked to folks, I’ve talked to Senator Sessions and others out there — but it is a fundamentally lost issue by many in elected positions today — is what is this doing for American workers looking for jobs, what is this doing to wages, and we need to have that be at the forefront of our discussion going forward.

Walker is right that this is a perspective on immigration that the political class generally abhors, and naturally, he is taking hits for his “far right” position, here and here. Walker should take the shots as a compliment, and hopefully, the rest of the field will begin to think and talk about immigration the same way.

January 3, 2011 - Walker assumes Office of Governor of Wisconsin.

June 27, 2011: Walker Revokes In-state Tuition For Undocumented Students Attending Univ And Colleges In Wisconsin "- On Sunday, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (R) signed his two-year 2011-2013 budget, which included ending in-state tuition for undocumented students attending public universities and colleges. In-state tuition for undocumented students was approved two years ago by former Governor Jim Doyle (D) after the Hispanic community struggled for 10 years to pass it."...

March 1, 2015: Fox News: Chris Wallace interviews Scott Walker:

".....WALKER: And my view has changed. I'm flat out saying it. I'm -- candidates can say that. Sometimes they don't. I'm saying my --

WALLACE: So, you've changed from 2013?

WALKER: Absolutely. I look at the problems we've experienced for the last few years. I've talked to governors on the border and others out there. I've talked to people all across America.

And the concerns I have is that we need to secure the border. We ultimately need to put in place a system that works. A legal immigration system that works.

And part of doing this is put the onus on employers, getting them E-Verify and tools to do that. But I don't think you do it through amnesty.".....

March 2015: “We strongly dispute this account. Governor Walker has been very clear that he does not support amnesty and believes that border security must be established and the rule of law must be followed. His position has not changed, he does not support citizenship for illegal immigrants, and this story line is false,” she announced in an email to journalists Thursday afternoon.”

“I made it clear that for me, if somebody wants to be a citizen, they need to go back to their country of origin, get in line, no preferential treatment,” Walker said. “In terms of what to do beyond that, again, that’s something we got to work with Congress on.”

April 20, 2015: Scott Walker Lays Out Pro American Worker Stance on Immigration "During an interview with Glenn Beck, Walker became the first declared or potential 2016 GOP presidential candidate to stake out a position on immigration fully in line with that of Senate Judiciary Committee subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest chairman Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL). He also noted that he has been working with Chairman Sessions on the issue to learn more about it.

Walker is now the only potential or declared GOP presidential candidate to discuss the negative effects of a massive increase in legal immigration on American workers:..........................."

I need to see more detail about how Walker would protect American wages short of stopping illegal immigration. The laws of supply and demand apply here

Most people that try to pass off untruths, take flack.

As of March 1st, Walker confirmed that if illegals pay a fine, they should be able to stay in the U. S.

10:20 in this video

Scott is asked if illegals pay a fine, if they can stay.

Listen to his garbled answer yourself. He says he believes a way can be found to do that.

I have been highly suspicious of the claim he changed his mind. I’m glad I was.

Some folks are very vested in Walker for some reason. They are trying to blur his beliefs hoping you will believe them. Listen for yourself 10:20 in.

I agree with you on all the issues you raise but I’ll take him talking about wages if that’s what works. If he gets support for enforcing the borders by getting people to realize illegals are undercutting their wages, so be it.

The unfairness of competing with slave labor was a founding principle, more persuasive than the moral aspect, behind the formation and success of the early Republican Party. Similarly linking cheap illegal immigrant labor to the decline of working class Americans has real political potential in a way not seen since the time of Reagan’s appeal to patriotic working class Democrats.

I’m severely conservative on immigration now. :-)

I am inviting those who support Walker to list specifically the policies or actions he would take as President that have earned their support.

For instance, Cruz has said he would repeal Obamacare and recognizes it as the single most regulatory impediment on our economy. It is unlikely that Walker will do anyting to repeal Obamacare, since Walker bypassed his legislature to implement it in Wisconsin, a move that sounds disturbingly like the Executive Order problem we have now.

Now he is, once again, changing his position on illegal immigraion. This issue is one that any serious candidate should have had a firm handle on from the beginning. I have a hard time trusting a candidate who changes his position based on political expediency rather than strong conviction.

I suggested folks listen at 10:20. Immigration begins to be discussed at nine minutes and something. People would do well to go back to that point and listen to all the immigration talk.

I say this because there is a clip in there that reveals what Walker’s 2013 beliefs were. When you hear that, then hear him say he should be able to find a way for illegal who pay a fine to stay (on 03/01/2015), it’s clear his policy hasn’t changed.

Then he specifically says it has, and that isn’t try.

Not only does he believe illegals should stay, he actually fibs around his change in policy.

The man’s policy is wrong and he’s willing to lie to me. And those who misrepresent him to us here are also willing to do that.

“You’re playing whack-a-mole.”

How is asking for a list of positions a candidate holds that earned someones support playing a game? If we support a candidate we should surely have a knowledge of what they would do if elected to the office.

I truly think Walker has done some good stuff in his state. Folks were listing some of it yesterday. If you look at Walker threads you’ll probably find it.

It was problematic for me when I heard he had changed his policy 15 years after it was a big issue in our nation.

Then I found out that he hasn’t changed his mind at all, and he’s willing to mislead folks into thinking he has.

That’s a double-whammy no-no for me.

I’m not so much interested in what he has done as governor. I wanted to know what he has said he would do as President that has earned their support.

Well, I guess that’s a fair point. I believe his inclinations as governor are important too.

Anyone can promise anything. A track record is important too.

We can certainly see what the lack of one can cost us, right now.
