Amid national protests over police treatment of black men, Baltimore officials have promised to investigate the death of Freddie Gray, an apparently healthy 25-year-old who was rushed to a hospital with spinal cord injuries after being chased and tackled by police officers.
Mr. Gray, who is black, died Sunday, a week after his arrest. His familys lawyer said that 80 percent of his spinal cord was severed at the neck while he was in police custody, and that he later lapsed into a coma. Witnesses captured parts of Mr Grays encounter with the police on a cellphone video, in which screams can be heard as officers drag him to a transport van.
On Sunday, as protesters surrounded the Baltimore Police Departments Western District station demanding answers, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake vowed the city would conduct a thorough investigation to make sure the facts come out. She is planning a second news conference, along with Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts, on Monday afternoon.
The questions that many of you have are the same questions that were asking, the mayor said, adding, I take very seriously my obligation of transparency.
On Monday, police officers filed court documents saying that Mr. Gray had been arrested without force or incident. The officers asked that Mr. Gray be charged with carrying a switchblade, according to the court records, which were obtained by The Associated Press.
The Police Departments deputy commissioner, Jerry Rodriguez, said the police believed Mr. Gray was involved in a drug dealing activity. But a lawyer for the Gray family, William Murphy Jr., has said there is no evidence that Mr. Gray committed a crime.

What an ass.
I heard a few more details on this. He apparently sustained his injuries in the back of a police van . One of the things police do (if someone pisses them off or just for fun) is cuff a prisoner so that he can’t use his hands to protect himself and the drive around accelerating hard, braking hard whipping around corners etc to slam the prisoner around the inside of the police van. It administers a severe beating without the cops even touching their victim.
Where are the highest crime areas in almost any city? A third of all black men will end up in prison at some point in their lives. That is a fact, not a racist statement.
‘On Monday, police officers filed court documents saying that Mr. Gray had been arrested without force or incident.’
This may be the worst cop brutality story I’ve heard of in the country within the last 25 years. It reads as though there was Internal or Partial Decapitation, albeit involuntary or inadvertant. This is pretty bad.
How about a paraphrase a respected author? When you know how to act, good things happen to you: but when you don’t act right, you have a difficult life. Would you curse that author?
Pro 13:15 Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.
It'll be interesting how they explain the injury then.
Also, words mean things. When I wrote, “I’m not defending police murder,” I meant that I’m not defending murder by police. But, would you argue that breaking crimes, does not lead to more negative interactions with police? It seems pretty simple. The article implies that black men are the targets of this. Is that what you’re arguing?
Goodness. I give up.
...and you know this how?
I just saw this story on Fox News. Horrible.
The solution would be more community policing, so people were familiar with a police presence, lawful public behavior, and respecting authority.
“... It’ll be interesting how they explain the injury then..”
He fell down the steps... 42 times.
I think the best solution is two parents living in the home. If society, the left, the race hucksters really wanted to save black lives, they’d work toward making sure black kids had fathers.
Bal’more ping, hon.
Sucks to be cuffed in the back of a police van then.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
The worst part was his “crime”. He was arrested on a “weapons charge” for having a pocketknife clipped to his pocket
When did that become a criminal offense. I live in Maryland and have read the knife laws, archaic as they may be, that’s not illegal
That's true regardless of race.
