I like knowing that we liberated Poland, and that they are now part of our alliance.

I bet they like it as well.

Good idea, really, and probably less expensive and less risky than trying to rely on various sensors alone.

Who was it that scrapped Bush’s missile-defense plan for Poland and the Czech Republic, among others?

If such a blatant retreat and such a perverted signal of weakness had not been presented to the world (by ditching the tech advantage and missile shield) then perhaps Russia would not have thrown its weight around biting off pieces of Ukraine. Many lives may have been saved.

But the Peace Prize recipient had to help cause war and strife by empowering would-be thugs.

Someone gets it here. It’s called a POWER VACUUM and it was not just Obama, but many people on this side that DEMANDED we disengage from Europe. Well, we pretty much did, and given the Europeans are TOTALLY UNABLE to look out for themselves, the Russians marched right in - or at least in their direction, maybe, eventually, right in.

well, to put this in perspective, support for the USA is high in Poland -- there were Americans who fought for Poland and Poles who fought for America (right from the revolutionary war heroes like Tadeusz Kościuszko etc) through to the Poles who died for the allies in WWII

But they still remember the betrayal by FDR when he gave Poland to Stalin

Also, the USA was instrumental in and played a huge role in freeing Poland from the USSR, but it did not "liberate Poland" -- the Poles did it themselves starting first with the Solidarity movement.

Stalin made the same mistake that the Tsars made -- trying to incorporate Poland into a Russian alliance -- that action has twice disintegrated Russian empires. Why? Well, Stalin said it himself -- putting communism on Poland was like putting a saddle on a cow

Poland never fell for the pan-Slavic myth that the Muscowites peddled (well, they did like pan-Slavism, but as long as it was lead by Poland or anyone but Moscow) and it considers itself part of the West by virtue of its Catholic culture

Poland would never be digested by Russia -- it would cause Russia severe indigestion.

But this time they don't trust their "allies" to fully live up to their promises....

Note true. Ukraine is a very different case from Lithuania or Latvia -- the Ukrainians (like the Belarussians and the Muscowites themselves) are Eastern Slavs. All three have common roots, mutually intelligible languages and they have been ruled by Moscow for centuries both administratively and religiously. Mentally the majorities in the three nations are similar.

Zooming in on Ukraine and the majority speak Russian and were under heavy Soviet rule. In the East they spoke primarily or only Russian while the western part is more mixed.

the "Europeans" as you put it can handle a Russian invasion in terms of military force, but the question is always whether the French, Germans, English would fight when the eastern members of Europe are invaded or whether they would wait until the fighting reaches their borders

America and Reagan liberated Poland, Poland do not do it themselves, but their pressure, along with Thatcher and NATO and all the other forces that Reagan assisted and showed light to and support for, all helped us.

No America then no opposition to continued Russian conquest and control, no Reagan, and Poland would still be under Russia.
