US Senator Claire McCaskill Rips Duke University For 'One and Done' Collegiate Basketball Players
Brietbart News ^ | 7 Apr 2015 | by WILLIAM BIGELOW

Posted on 04/07/2015 11:35:03 AM PDT by drewh

After Duke University won the men’s NCAA basketball tournament Monday night, Senator Claire McCaskill weighed-in on Twitter.

Congrats to Duke, but I was rooting for team who had stars that are actually going to college & not just doing semester tryout for NBA.

— Claire McCaskill (@clairecmc) April 7, 2015

McCaskill’s snide remark implicitly slammed Duke’s Jahlil Okafor, who is leaving after his freshman year to turn pro, and other Duke freshman who may not return for their sophomore seasons.

Duke has gained a reputation as a school where players complete their education before turning pro. According to statistics compiled by the NCAA, every student recruited to Duke by Coach Mike Krzyzewski between 2004 and 2007 eventually graduated.

Krzyzewski won the championship with four freshman, and several are expected to go pro early. This is the way college athletics now works, as John Calipari’s Kentucky program proves. But McCaskill doesn’t like it – although she doesn’t explain why highly talented young black men shouldn’t be able to leave college early to pursue their careers, unlike talented young white men or Hispanic men who skip college altogether to play baseball. McCaskill’s rant continued:

I see I have stirred things up. Sorry, but I’m sad about the one & done thing.I understand why it’s happening, but I don’t have to like it.

— Claire McCaskill (@clairecmc) April 7, 2015

To be clear folks, this isn’t about the kids, this is about the system. This is about the NCAA/NBA.I don’t blame the very talented athletes.

— Claire McCaskill (@clairecmc) April 7, 2015

Translation? The kids must be pushed through higher education despite the fact that their career aspirations lie in the NBA, not in an MBA.

Eliminate the likes of March Madness and bring back the old Freshman not eligible.

I like Coach K. I didn’t see much of the game, but I saw one important part. It was right after halftime. He looked cool, calm and all business. It’s hard to beat a coach with his experience. Bo Ryan is a great coach, too.

Coach K was starting to get criticized for having too many white players. Nobody can criticize him on that any more.

Grade school kids are playing in national tournaments. It’s not like the old days any more. It used to be that teams with upperclassmen could intimidate the freshman. It doesn’t work so good any more. The freshmen are better athletes with more experience. You’re putting team experience up against athleticism, and the athleticism is going to win most of those games.

Coach K wants to win. He will find a way to win. He’s an old Soldier.

Domantas Sabonis had a nice block of one of Okafor's shots in the Elite 8 game. I'm not sure if he has the upper body strength for the NBA yet.

Good news for Zag fans is our 3 bigs are returning, and we have a couple of red shirts, including another 7 footer.

A perfectly valid opinion. She's certainly entitled to have that affect her rooting interest. Not sure why people would get worked up over it.

If I am a college freshman, and someone waves a contract in front of me with eight figures on it, I’d probably figure that college can wait.

If I decided to stick it out, and wreck a knee, I’d finish school and be kicking myself with the other knee for a long time.

I can't believe that I am siding with Clair McIdiot on this. The "talented young white men or Hispanic men who skip college altogether to play professional baseball" are not taking up a valuable seat at a college or university -- often at taxpayer expense -- under the false pretext of improving their lives and advancing their job prospects through higher education. The vast majority of guys who skip college to play baseball practice their trade in near obscurity for low pay that barely covers their living expenses, with little chance of making the big leagues. They do not pretend to be students, pretending to go to class, where they pretend to study, take exams, and get passing grades.

Obvioudly Clarie is a racist. She would rather have talented young black men serve a White University than enter the paid labor market and earning an avg $24.8. Entering the NBA 3 year early can increase earning potential 75%!

Shut your pie hole Claire! I’m not interested in what you think about Basketball players or colleges or tournaments involving same. You prove your idiocy every time you open that pie hole.

Jesus. Can't politicians keep their noses out of anything?

Her problem might might not be with the “kids” but she is pissing on their victory.

Gumble said Bo Ryan was a class act last night? Ryan started this. The same Bo Ryan who said Duke played Globetrotter basketball when Duke beat Wisconsin by 10 this season—on Wisconsin's court.
Bo Ryan is a classless POS.

“...most of these kids are in no way academically qualified for college....

Not so at Duke. They must be academically qualified to enter the university and maintain their grades once enrolled. That has always been a problem for Duke, Vanderbilt and other such schools. It is difficult to get top drawer recruits in basketball and football that can be enrolled.

State universities such as Wisconsin have lower entry requirements.

I understand that many high tech business owners and engineers dropped out of college to get on with their life.

She clearly must've been either a Kentucky or Wisconsin fan.

The difference in the end was COACHING.

When you watch Mike "K" you're watching one of the college coach candidates for "BEST EVER" label.

No one can accuse Missouri of one -and-done. 9-23. No wonder she thinks the NCAA should take a look at that.

Perhaps she is more racist than she would ever imagine. That goes for Bo Ryan, too.

Did she look at Duke and assume since the teams has more black than white players, Duke is a one & done team? Profiling the team, is she?

Not sure how much she knows about the Wisconsin program...is she schooled in the paticulars or did she assume a lighter colored team is a more academic team?

Hey Claire-you are one reason we never wanted Missouri in the SEC.

You don't get in to Duke unless you have good academics.
All you have to do is listen to the player's interviews after the game.
You won't hear Ebonics from Duke players, unlike many other player interviews.
They are articulate young men.

As for jumping to the NBA after freshman year, I agree. That should be stopped, age restriction or something.

I'll give Duke some credit for many of their years they did seem to have a lot of players graduating. But it seems in latter years Coach K has recruited a lot of players who make it clear they're one and done.

This year the Badgers lost one of the nation's best hs players, Diamond Stone (from a Wisconsin hs), to conference rival Maryland. There are rumors Stone will be one and done. In that case, I'm glad we didn't get him. I don't want one and done players just to win a nat. championsip. Believe me, I'm still smarting from last night, but I'd rather we do it the way we're doing it than Kentucky or many of those other schools.

And incidentally, I don't begrudge the players who leave after one year one bit. They're just looking out for their future. I might do the same thing if someone waved a million dollars in my face. It's the system that stinks.

Too bad we can’t make the losers in congress, one and done. In their cases, it’s one lifetime and done.
