If the 19th century English philosopher George Henry Lewes heard Senator Ted Cruz speak as he did Monday at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, then Senator Cruz could convincingly be said to be the inspiration for Mr. Lewes quote that originality is independence, not rebellion; it is sincerity, not antagonism.
Senator Cruz announced at Liberty that he is seeking the Republican nomination for president. Our story does not end there. Cruzs speech touched on more than campaign promises or party platform. It touched focused on the senators beliefs, deeply felt, on governments limited role in relation to man, to the yearning for freedom in all of us, and our inalienable rights derived from God.
Cruz drew a straight line (a line in the sand, really) from Jefferson and Madison to the present, from 1776 to 2015, and barely strayed from it. It is from those foundational principles, Senator Cruz argued, that conservatism and limited government ideals carry on as the true torchbearer in keeping lit this American experiment.
He asked us to imagine what is possible precisely because of what our nations existence and story seems so improbable. At a place not far from Appomattox Court House where General Grant accepted Robert E. Lees surrender to end the Civil War 150 years ago, the conservative movement, at least for a day, was captured and inspired by the words of the junior senator from Texas.
There are those who say Cruzs deeply held beliefs, brashness and seemingly uncompromising style reflect not a governing temperament but a litigators mentality, and that of a man who has stood and argued nine times before the United States Supreme Court. Far from being admirable and in the mold of Mr. Lewes quote, those on the left warn of extremism and, when describing Senator Cruz, echo Oscar Wilde who said that too much sincerity can be a fatal thing. Equivocating Senator Cruz aint.
Agreeableness is a worthy trait, but leadership has no substitute in a time of urgent needs. Whether Senator Cruz can organize a majority of the electorate and effectively govern are questions to be debated thoughtfully and decided in the coming months. But to suggest his strongly held convictions are not to be taken seriously precisely because they are fervently and intelligently held is to whitewash our nations history.
The ideas and changes that made this nation strong from stem to stern have always began unpopular, always faced resistance and have been at first held only by the most true believers. In some ways, to be unpopular is to be admirable. Senator Cruzs unabashed conservatism, his sincerity of faith, his love of country and passion of purpose are worthy of this nations consideration and yes, admiration.
Norman Rockwells famous 1943 painting Freedom of Speech depicts a man, at a time-honored local town hall meeting, standing up as the sole dissenting voice before his community. It captures this republics long tradition of civic involvement and self-expression, even in the minority.
Ted Cruz continues on this tradition, fitting for a man used to making his case, as he did so eloquently again in Lynchburg this week.
Worth a read.
Great post!!!! Post it later tonight or tomorrow again!!!
Or better yet, stick it on the side bar!!!!!
Wait for my next one. One of those “youth” that Ted has no chance at this year, yet he’s endorsing him from the masthead of his college newspaper...
Ted Cruz is the bomb.
Senator Cruz represents a solid stand for the United States Constitution and those laws....reason enough for the anti-constitutionalists progressive Left to have their long knives out as well as corrupting the social media with their misinformation.
I think Senator Cruz would say what some wag said Reagan would have said about ISIS...."isis would be waswas.
We have given and will give to this good American....the Elite GOP should be proud to have him in their camp!
Cruz is going to run the gauntlet. I can 100% guarantee that we, conservatives, will end up slitting his political throat.
Cruz, Pence, we will never take to the streets for the guys that put themselves out there, we always stab them in the back.
Where were we supporting Pence? Were we out on the streets fighting for liberty? Nope, but we whine now because we lost.
Live with it folks. Our fate is determined!
Ted Cruz continues on this tradition.
A guy in a van tosses this paper in my driveway every day.
I’m on the map!
Eventually I do a thread with every FReeper’s local paper.
