Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has authorized a short-term needle exchange program to help contain an outbreak of HIV in a county with 79 confirmed new infections since January.
Pence on Thursday declared a public health emergency in Scott County, about 30 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky. He ordered the state health department to set up a command center to coordinate HIV and substance abuse treatment and establish a mobile unit to enroll people in a state-run health program.
Indiana bars needle exchange programs, but Pence authorized a short-term exchange on the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health officials.

More moral bankruptcy on parade!
wouldn’t it be more efficient to just outlaw homosexuality?
“wouldnt it be more efficient to just outlaw homosexuality?”
There are 79 new cases of HIV in a county of less than 25,000 people, most of which are IV drug users.
You can argue with the morality of a needle exchange, but to pin this outbreak on homosexuals is missing the mark.
It didn’t mention homosexuals because of “bug-hunters”. That number would skyrocket.
Agree, this is the heroin plague that’s hitting the midwest.
Heroin plague, all over the place here in the midwest, unfortunately.
The only problem is that in every single documented case of HIV/AIDS it always leads to a Homosexual encounter in the chain of evidence.
This article (from IndyStar which can’t be posted here) has more information.
In a county of 25000 people, there have been 79 new HIV cases linked to drug use diagnosed since the beginning of 2015. There are usually 5 per year.
“The only problem is that in every single documented case of HIV/AIDS it always leads to a Homosexual encounter in the chain of evidence.”
Could be. But what good does your solution do to the immediate needs of this county? Your “more efficient” method doesn’t do shit for the straight people who are shooting up heroin.
We used to QUARANTINE folks with incurable infectious diseases, it will still work today.
I thought heroin would be more expensive since there are no longer poppy fields in Afghanistan.....
Might as well just reopen the opium dens....
I am SICK of this obsession with HIV(most of which is self inflicted) when they get billions in research when LYME disease is being diagnosed in numbers far outstripping AIDS and through no fault of the victims while the CDC and ISDC sits on their thumbs and refuses to acknowledge the problem or even give a nod to the fact that a couple weeks of antibiotics is not sufficient to fix a chronic problem—thus insurance companies decline to cover it as a long term problem in many cases.
Typical governor move. Pence could still resign before his first term is up.
Heroin: another gift from our neighbors to the south, Mexico.
(And Columbia.)
If we are actually fighting a war on drugs, why don’t we have troops stationed on our southern border intercepting the Mexican narco-terrorists who are bringing this poison into our country.
crickets.....
Lyme disease is growing? I don’t like the sound of that. Although Lyne disease can be taken care of if you figure out the person has it in the early stages, issues such as brain damage and paralysis can be avoided or reversed. HIV on the other hand, you have that in you permanently, and the best you can do is suppress it hard, and hope it isn’t a strain that has developed immunity to the antiviral medication. But I agree that Lyme disease isn’t entirely possible to avoid.
