Could Mayor Rahm Emanuel be thinking about renaming Chicagos airports, perhaps after President Barack Obama?
Emanuel brought up the airports' names during a candidate forum Wednesday night at Chicago State University.
The topic came up as the mayor fielded a question on why he quickly proposed, then abandoned efforts to name a new North Side high school after Obama and the South Sides Stony Island Parkway after the late Arthur Brazier, a revered African-American civic leader who founded the Woodlawn Organization and was pastor of the Apostolic Church of God for 48 years.
"We have to, in some way, whether its President Obama or in the other case, Dr. Brazier, acknowledge people who have done significant things. We have an airport, two of them, named after, you know, Midway Airport, OHare Airport, Emanuel said. These are people who have been transformative in the city of Chicago. But we have airports named after battleships.
Actually, OHare is named after World War II Navy pilot Edward Butch OHare, and Midway was given its name by city officials in 1949 in remembrance of the 1942 Battle of Midway, a crucial battle in the Pacific during World War II.
Emanuel did not take questions from reporters following the forum. Update: Later, Emanuel spokeswoman Kelley Quinn said the mayor has no plans to rename either airport.
The mayor gave his answer in acknowledging he erred in seeking to name a North Side high school after the president, when Obama got his start in politics on the South Side......

Go ahead, Rahm, I’m never visiting your stinking city again anyway.
Rename Meigs airport - oh wait cannot do that a previous Mayor bulldozed it.
Could rename Peatone- oh wait cannot do that either- democrats still cannot build that airport after what 20 yrs.
Rahm is panicking that the black vote is deserting him.
He certainly is.
No one likes this guy.
He’s resorted to scaring Republican voters to the polls [2 weeks away].
Could change the designation from ORD to POS.
O'Traitor International.
Just in case you haven’t read the whole story of Butch O’Hare.

We have enough streets, roads, and bridges built after MLK JR we don’t need an airport named after the man who has destroyed our Economy to the point of Depression Era levels.
Chi can name a new street after him, rather than expend thousands of $$ to change all those air port signs.
I was thinking flies and mosquitos.
Obama International Airport should be in Kenya...or at the scene of the Wing Airplane crash...
Why not Mohamed Atta International since we’ve obviously all gone insane?
We’re in the Cuckoo’s nest for sure.
This says more about Rahm’s desperation than anything else.
If there is any justice in this world when all is said and done Obama won’t be able to get a porta potty named after him.
If they rename the airport Obama:
1) They will have to remove the photo id requirement to fly.
2) Illegal aliens will be moved up to first class and US citizens will be made to fly in the back of the plane.
3) If the pilot has to shut down one of the engines for safety purposes, the flight crew will close the rest rooms, get on the PA system and blame the pilot.
I often use his initials...B.O.
If Dan Quayle had said this, every man, woman, child, cat, and dog in the U.S. would know about it by now.
Agreed. Emmanuel sounds like an ignorant fool to think that Midway Airport was named after the USS Midway. But since he is liberal, this gaffe will be forgotten.
If he names a school on the South Side after Obama, it will become a marker, just as Martin Luther King Blvd. is in so many places, of a failing school full of failing students and no meaningful education happening inside.
Now that's nasty. Good too.
In Any City, USA, “Martin Luther King Blvd.” means “Your car had better be in excellent condition, your tires resistant to nails and broken glass, you need to hope you don’t get any red lights, and you’d better get out of here fast!”
Obama International Airport...?
Good Grief!!!
