Judith Shulevitz, writing in theNew York Times, reports that infantilized college students are indulging their need for insulation by demanding safe spaces where any speech that could hurt their feelings would be forbidden.
She lists examples of the demands of students that verge on the incredible; in one instance, when a student group at Brown University called the Sexual Assault Task Force discovered that a debate was to be held where one participant, a libertarian, would slam the term rape culture, the group protested to the administration. That prompted Browns president, Christina H. Paxson, to schedule a talk concurrent with the debate that would provide research and facts about the role of culture in sexual assault. A safe space was created for students upset by the debate; the space included cookies, coloring books, bubbles, Play-Doh, calming music, pillows, blankets, and a video of puppies.
Brown is not alone; Columbia Universitys student group Everyone Allied Against Homophobia slid a flier stating I want this space to be a safe space under the door of every dorm room on campus stipulating that the flier be affixed to the windows of the room. The group published the flier in the Columbia Daily Spectator.
One student, Adam Shapiro, protested by printing his own flier that called his room a dangerous place, then published his flier in the Columbia Daily Spectator. He wrote, Kindness alone wont allow us to gain more insight into truth. If the point of a safe space is therapy for people who feel victimized by traumatization, that sounds like a great mission. He added that the fear of offending students has led to professors avoiding saying anything remotely controversial.

This is satire..right? Please tell me it is..
One wonders why the rest of the campus out of earshot of the debate was not already “safe” enough for the delicate flowers who might be distressed by hearing blasphemy against feminist piety.
Sounds like some boys need a punch in the face followed by a little screaming in their face. Then they ask for a safe space. Just a bunch of pussies.
Individuals’ God-given inalienable rights of life, liberty, and free pursuits, stated in the Declaration of Independence and presumed in the Constitution trump some kind of invented “right” to not being offended.
Nevertheless, the Constitution gives no power to the federal government to meddle in this area regardless of how one feels about being offended.
Don’t you know the constitution guarantees the right ‘not to be offended’ and guarantees that all will be protected from hearing any offensive words spoken or read. (sarcasm)
The left is anti free speech when we do it.
They can say anything with no problem.
Time to start cranking up First Amendment discussions.
I would consider myself a failure as a parent if my children grew up pleading for a “safe space”. My kids are not so delicate that they would burst into tears upon encountering someone with very different values or even no values (i.e., a liberal).
Alas no, it is a collection of some of the more egregious examples of the results of university administrations being solicitous toward childish claims of “feeling unsafe”, which has resulted in more (and more absurd) such claims.
What no fainting couches and smelling salts?
Puppies?!? Muslims consider dogs unclean. So much for that safe room. The first time Betty Lu colors a kid with the peach colored crayon, she’ll be kicked out for traumatizing some other race. Just wait until someone doesn’t use their jazzy hands when juice is passed out at nap time. Idiots. Can’t fix stupid.
Lions, Tigers and Bears oh my!
Good little Commies with their fingers in their ears. Can’t hear me sneak up behind them.
Ivy League schools. These are the students who are going to be the eventual leaders in business, manufacturing, politics.
Note to parents, if your kid isn’t going to an Ivy League school to learn a marketable skill, don’t waste your money. They could go to work at Starbucks now and make enough to leave home at 21.
This is another “gift” from Europe who have banned all sorts of “offensive” speech. Things are much worse over there with people being thrown into prison for simply uttering words not popular with the establishment. It, jail terms for “improper” speech, will be coming here soon thanks to the leftists.
“Safe space” seems to be the latest lib buzzword used to justify shutting down free speech on college campuses.
Men as young a 16 and 17 years old went off to war back in the 40s....they fought and killed Germans and Japanese and many died alone on a battlefield. Sad to think of how low we’ve sunk in this country.
