Dems want to empower Boehner
thehill.com ^ | 3/22/15 | Mike Lillis

House Democrats fighting for leverage in the GOP Congress are hoping they can empower an unlikely ally: Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

Democrats are outnumbered by more than 50 members – and have almost no power to bring bills to the floor.

But they see Boehner as a willing compromiser on must-pass legislation like funding the government and raising the debt ceiling – once the Speaker can convince his troops that the partisan route endorsed by his conservative wing has been denied. By banding together in veto-sustaining majorities against conservative proposals demanded by Boehner’s right flank, Democrats hope to both sink those GOP measures and grease the skids for more moderate compromises.

“[The Republicans] have a majority party that's deeply divided,” Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), the Democratic whip, said Thursday from his office in the Capitol.

“And … what we've learned is if we stick together – and we have been sticking together, we've been very unified – that it can empower Speaker Boehner at some point in time to say, 'Look, I tried every which way I can think of to accomplish the objectives that our caucus wants to do. But if I can't accomplish those, I will not allow the government to shut down, the debt limit to be not extended, or other things that are harmful to the country,’” Hoyer said.

Those dynamics were on full display in the recent fight over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

House conservatives had insisted that the package include amendments blocking President Obama's executive actions on immigration, and the House passed five such provisions on largely party-line votes.

I will have to castigate you using silly FRino logic.

"If you do not support Boehner and McConnell destroying America, then you must be supporting Nazi Pelosi, Reid and Obama destroying America.

Now don't forgot to send donations to the GOP and make sure you vote Bush in 2016 because he is not as bad as Hitlery. Have a nice day."

Here’s a different view:

Here's a Liberal Republican view, anyways:

There is a group of Republicans which, although NOT the MAJORITY of all Republicans in Congress, nevertheless wants all Republicans to dance to their tune.

Yeah. Did you know you are on a forum dedicated to those Republicans, Conservatives? If you are here but do not share their goal, or if you excuse or back liberal Republicans, there are better places on the net for you.

Will this group work to educate their brothers (and sisters) to explain why the group’s positions and prescriptions are correct? No. Too hard.... Will this group work to educate voters so that RINOs will be rejected in the next primaries? No. Too hard...

Nonsense. I did it. I helped overturn the RINO GOP in Dekalb County. Others do far more.

Will this group prepare programs and bills that MEET THEIR OWN STATED OBJECTIVES, like cutting spending, cutting waste and reining in rogue bureaucracies? No. Too hard...

Are you on crack? That's exactly what they do!

What’s left? Complain about the leaders elected by the majority of Republicans, giving ammunition to the Democrats for the next election.

.... because it is SO MUCH BETTER when Republicans give away Amnesty to illegals, bankrupt the country, guide us towards Socialism, ban guns, and set up the machinery of tyranny in America. SO much better than when Democrats do the exact same things. Joining the Democrats in complaining about Republicans is SOOOooo EASY! And it makes good headlines in the clown-media, too...

A simple testosterone shot might help...a little.

Hi Laz,

Somehow, I thought that FReepers could discuss different points of view. Actually, I still think so. Otherwise, this forum for “discussion” is just an echo-chamber, isn’t it?

This thread started with the concept of “must-pass” legislation, such as the rapidly approaching need to raise our national debt ceiling.

IMHO, Obama would like nothing better than to see Republicans FAIL to pass a “must-pass” bill like that.

THEN Obama can raise the debt limit by “Executive Order” and BLAME his illegal action on “do-nothing” Republicans.

Will he mention HIS own failure to cut spending? Will the goose-stepping media blame Obama? Of course not!

So I think that Boehner should pre-empt Obama’s dirty trick by passing an increase in the debt-ceiling bill with:

(1) a series of aggressive committee hearings to showcase government waste where that waste must be “defended” by Obama’s incompetent Agency Chiefs
(2) a small increase in the ceiling
(3) a rider that keeps the EPA from spending any additional government funds to “monitor” citizens’ barbecue grills and
(4) a rider that keeps the EPA from “monitoring” the hot water used by citizens for showers, bathtubs and shaving.
(5) other riders to “shut down” other wasteful foolishness.

That’s what I hope to see.

What is your plan?

Would you play the role Obama has assigned to you?

Or would you handle the bill to increase our debt-limit in a different way?

Sir,

I’ll listen to your arguments but the sum total of them is just “business as usual” and “kick the can down the road” and twenty trillion in debt is “no big deal” and twenty million new illegal, illiterate and poor as dirt, criminal and diseased Mexicans is ok too.

Oh, and our Speaker and Majority Leader telling us bald face lies is likewise ok.

With respect, I think your the one missing the MAIN point. Most of us on FR are tired of those Liberal arguments.

Hi Cen-Tejas,

IIRC, our Constitution includes a network of “checks and balances”.

For example, if Congress disapproves of Obama’s “Amnesty for Illegals” program, Congress can pass a law prohibiting that Amnesty. CHECK!

But the President can then VETO that law. BALANCE!

This allows the Congress to OVERRIDE that veto. CHECK!

Unless the votes to override do not represent a “super-majority”. BALANCE!

If the veto is not overridden, then, as an alternate, Congress can start impeachment of the President. CHECK!

But a supermajority is required to remove a President. BALANCE!

The bottom line is that, unless Conservatives have — or can “get” a supermajority by clever politicking — a sitting President can DEFY the Congress and “kick the [debt] can down the road”.

IMHO, the peaceful choice would be to persuade Democrats like Manchin and Gonzales to make our “majority” a “super-majority” so we don’t have to bend to Obama. I hope that Boehner and McConnell are making progress with that.

Other than that, I think our next opportunity is the 2016 election, where electing fewer Democrats will make getting GOP “supermajorities” easier. I am very worried about kicking America’s debt problem that far.

phony 1, I am old enough to have taken Civics in High School but nevertheless I thank you for the refresher course.

I’m trying to get to the Heart of what you are trying to say to thousands of conservative freepers. I THINK that as your Civics lesson shows, the Heart of WHAT you are trying to say is that YOU still think that “business as usual” is going to get us across the Rubicon.

Millions of us conservatives, mindful of civics, did indeed follow your suggestion and try one more time. So, we went to the voting booth and voted once again in support of select individuals because of PROMISES they made to us.

Once again, as we all know, we were lied to with the most aggregious liars being Boehner and McConnell. You need to try and see that some of us hate those two guys more than Obama and Pelosi and Reid!

So, here we are and millions of us jus WILL NOT play “let’s do business as usual” any more which is, more or less, what you are attempting to persuade us to do.

I view it as a safe haven.

No, progressive Republicans are not embraced here. I've seen hundreds go down.

Hi Cen-Tejas,

As I see it, the problem we have now is that we conservatives do NOT have super-majorities in the House and Senate that could compel Obama to:

(1) either follow the Constitution or

(2) be successfully impeached!

THEREFORE, we need to:

(1) elect a conservative President in 2016 to put America back on track or

(2) elect super-majorities to restrain President Hillary after 2016 or

(3) elect super-majorities to restrain President Hillary after 2018

I recognize this is not a pretty map for America’s future.

But, IMHO, it will take more than “threats” by us conservatives to HARM AMERICA to “force” Obama to act like a real American President.

Obama doesn’t care and so such threats from us must fail.

IMHO, they will also consume resources we will need to dump the garbage in 2016.

If you have other ideas, I’m all ears...

The last time I could find either party having a “Super-Majority” (2/3) was way back in the 74th Congress in 1935. And, that was the Dems.

With 47% of the electorate willing to vote for a Democrat even if he/she was a convicted serial killer, I don’t see a “Super Majority” worthy of conversation. Mathematically, it is not possible. You might say it’s a myth.

So, back to a point of agreement in your kick off post today. You used the term “non violent”. Maybe there is some hope for that but not if people like Boehner, McConnell and many others keep lying to us.

That said, you asked for “other ideas”. Here are a few:

1. Employ the “Penney plan” immediately to get the government headed in the direction of being balanced in 5 years.
2. Convene the Article 5 convention using Levins Liberty Amendments as a basis to update the Constitution.
3. Strictly enforce the 10th Ammendment.
4. Repeal the seventeenth Ammendment.
5. Abolish IRS and replace it with one of the Flat Tax proposals.

Now, you will say, or someone will, the liberals in the Democratic Party and the Liberals in the Republican Party will oppose all of that. And, you will be right.

So, can violence be avoided, Some of us are beginning to think Jeffferson nailed it again on his comment about watering the “tree of liberty”.

And one way we do that is don’t cower and hide under the desk when the Dems issue forth with that tired old refrain “the Pubs are gonna shut down OUR absolutely essential government”!

Those 50 guys in the House you complain about are wanting their leaders to QUIT hiding under the desk and call their bluff! Months following the last “so called” shutdown led by Cruz the American People handed the Flubs the biggest electoral victory in the past 100 years! Bottom line is Donahue is jerking McConnells and Boehners chain, or something!

Hi Cen-Tejas,

Good List! Thank you!

I’ll see what I can do to promote the “Penny Plan” and encourage a corrective Constitutional Convention.

And maybe we need a new “March-0n-Washington”.

I wonder what the chances are that the IRS will implode before April 15?
