An exotic dance club on Detroit’s west side has gone up in flames.
The fire took off early Wednesday morning at the Watts Mozambique Lounge on Fenkell Avenue and Northlawn Street, just east of Wyoming Avenue.
“This nightclub has been here for many, many years and we do understand it’s an exotic dancing, male-type of club here. The roof is about 30 percent engulfed in flames right now,” said WWJ’s Bill Szumanski from about the scene in Chopper 950. “Next door to it, adjacent, is a hair and nail salon and crews are now trying to keep the flames from jumping over to that building.”
Reporting live from the scene, WWJ’s Charlie Langton said several fire engines were trying to extinguish the flames, which were shooting through the roof with plumes of black smoke.
It’s unclear if anyone was in the building when the fire started, or if anyone is injured.
Firefighters are apparently having issues at the scene with working hydrants.
Officials have shut down Fenkell Avenue at Northlawn as crews continue to battle the blaze. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
Authorities say it’s too early to determine a cause of the fire.
Fire engines? I thought fire fighters extinguish flames.
In the 70’s it was called Watts Club Mozambique and it was second only to the legendary Baker’s Keyboard Lounge in drawing jazz talent. I saw Terry Collier there. It has a fine history and I’m sorry to hear it’s degenerated to what it apparently has become, and that it appears it is no more.

Considering the type of club, I'd say the presence of so many flamers would be a likely ignition source.

He’s correct. It’s male dancers for females. It was the use of the word “exotic” that , to me, made the description kind of ambiguous.
And there is a church across the street. Sounds like a bad neighborhood, too.

That place looks dangerous. Only has 1 door, I would never step inside a place without numerous exits incase of fire.
Looks like Detroit on the outside and with a sign like that it’s got to be a regular churnin’ urn of burnin’ funk on the inside!

Turns out that there was a fatal shooting there this past weekend. It went unreported until yesterday (3/11).
