Just curious, why is it acceptable for a Black rapper to use the N word as well as shout about raping women and harming police, yet a White uses the N word and they close down a frat and threaten to expel them.

What is Freedom of Speech anyway?

The cute tag line on the news about fraternity members having to move without any help from university housing, that they don’t help bigots, is also something they can’t do. Personally, I think most of the fraternity has some good lawsuits to file.

David Boren was a Democratic politician before he became president of the university. I will be surprised if he doesn’t try to expel the students. It could lead to a lawsuit but he might figure that the students in question wouldn’t sue to get readmitted and instead would go somewhere else. After all, one of the football team’s recruits has changed his mind about attending OU. That’s more significant to OU than upholding the right of white students to say offensive things.

The news is reporting that 2 students have now been expelled not for speech, but for creating a “hostile learning environment” for others.

They cannot expel the students. The fraternity, however, is a for profit business operating at the will of the University. It can be thrown off campus.

Incorrect.

The “racist” bludgeon will be used, and regardless of any prior written rules or rulings,

“racism” will be deemed worse than ANY other crime,
and the student will be expelled.

The President can and probably will censor speech, expel the students, allow sodomy and abortion and all other inversions of sound morals./s/

The silly part in this is the former frat members trying to distance themselves. The song they were singing does not sound like something they just made up. Actually it’s sounds more like the type of song/chant that would be passed on through the years from pledge class to pledge class as they’re sloshing beers in the frat house basement. Also guessing that there may be a few more stanzas to include other ethnicities.

It’s simple. They are FRAT boys. And they are all full of shinola. It’s a prerequisite.

It doesn't matter if the students are expelled or not. They are toast regardless.

The vast majority of professors are sufficiently left wing that none of the students involved will ever get a passing grade in anything.

I can see where suppressing racist speech helps to prevent riots, the governments responsible for protecting citizens.

However …

Not only have the states never amended the Constitution to expressly make not being insulted a constitutional right, but also consider this. When universities shut down racist speech they run the risk of violating Section 1 of the 14th Amendment, Section 1 prohibiting the states from unreasonably abridging constitutionally enumerated rights, 1st Amendment freedom of speech in such cases.

If the university attempts to suspend or expel them, I hope the ACLU shows up to defend their right to free speech.

If the university attempts to suspend or expel them, I would think the university will have to suspend or expel every African American who utters the “n word”, as well.

The university will not expel them for what they said. The university will expel them because they violated the student code of conduct or created a hostile environment or some such reason. So the First Amendment won’t enter into it and the students who were expelled will have no legal recourse.

All this hand-wringing over antiquated concepts such as "freedom of speech" is so overwrought. Everybody knows that singing juvenile, racist chants on a bus is the worst possible crime imaginable. We should convene Nuremburg II immediately! Let justice be done!

On a parallel note, why does a muslim organization at UC Irvine get away with painting swastikas on Jewish fraternity houses and avoid the same national news diatribe or consequences to the perpetrators? Make them famous.
