Remember how some thought a GOP majority in Congress would lead to a meaningful change in direction? Remember the promises from John Boehner that on a crucial issue he would whip a minority GOP votes to join 100% of House Democrats to oppose a strong majority of House Republicans?
I remember the former but have no recollection of the latter. Given this week's approval to fund the Department of Homeland Security, it turns out that the latter happened and the former is an extraordinarily distant memory. Less than 1/3rd of Republicans joined every single Democrat in voting for the bill. In other words, the results were almost identical to those that would be expected if the clock were rolled back to 2009, Pelosi was the Speaker, the GOP was in the minority.
The Daily Kos described it this way, "Boehner caves, Pelosi triumphs..." in their headline for the story.
The first sentence in the Washington Post's article began with "Boehner surrendered Tuesday to Democratic demands...".
During the middle of the fight to avoid a DHS "shutdown," soundbites abounded with dire warnings if the Republicans didn't relent and continue the funding; Pelosi released a statement and said:
The world is far too dangerous for House Republicans to show so little regard for the security of American families. Republicans should join with Democrats to keep the American people safe, protect our homeland, and bring a clean, long-term DHS funding bill to a vote immediately.
We know that to be a completely false and hyper-dramatic absurdity, as 85% of DHS employees are considered essential. In other words, almost every person there would NOT have been affected by a shutdown. One assumes that each night around 5 PM most of the "essential" employees go home for the evening and they probably also take Saturday and Sunday off as well. Yet no one clamors for 24-hour shifts and 7-day workweeks for every single DHS worker.
Certainly Boehner and the 74 others who voted with him knew this. So why did he cave/surrender?
Reports are that the Speaker thought the fight was unwinnable. After the vote, making reference to the bill passed in January that included amendments that directly countered the President's amnesty actions, he said this:
The House has done its job by passing legislation to fund DHS and block the president's executive actions on immigration. Unfortunately, the fight was never won in the other chamber. Democrats stayed united and blocked our bill, and our Republican colleagues in the Senate never found a way to win this fight.
So it was Mitch McConnell - who happens to lead a majority of his own - that was the problem. Got it.
Perhaps it moved him to tears that a former DHS chief-of-staff spoke to the Washington Post about the morale problems a funding halt would present? Or a concern that despite the results of last Fall's elections that he really thinks that bipartisanship is what America really needs or wants?
Whatever the actual motivation, the Democrat tactic of interpreting any and all electoral wins as a mandate is something the Republican leader certainly is not on board with. In that vein, one can reasonably wonder what good is a majority if you don't do anything with it. So far, the answer is "none at all."
Because the GOP is the “lessor evil”?
Or were the lessor evil until they joined with the “Bigger Evil”(Democrats)
to fund Amnesty.
And because of that, the “lessor evil” theme that many here have been spouting
got blown out of the water.
Because you were being stupid and didn't listen to their publicly declared support of amnesty? Because you thought that (R) was enough a reason to cast your vote? Because you thought that, somehow, it would be punishing
the Democrats… despite the Republican party refusing to stand against them on virtually anything?
I don't know — Why don't you tell me why you voted for a party that has shown that it has neither the ability nor the desire to stand for anything?
Need...more...duct...tape...
I am so tired of the, “We can’t win this fight,” excuse. They began their march to surrender before the ink was dry on the cromnibus bill. If they put half as much effort into defeating the Democrats as they do establishing an excuse for losing, they might actually find themselves on the winning end of something.
But Boehner, and McConnell are just getting started. They will cave on the debt ceiling this month. They will cave on Obamacare (if the Supreme Court rules against it), and they will cave on the budget. But don’t worry, they will haphazardly push through a bunch of show vote legislation so they can crow about their conservative treads.
Because you're stupid. You thought we weren't Democrats.
Of course, they will cave. That is what today’s GOP does.
At this rate, the GOP will hand back both the Senate and the House in 2016 to the Socialists and Marxists called the Democrat party, so the question will be short lived.
Well, because we’re stupid. We should have know (some of us did) they’d do this.
I received a fundraising appeal in the mail today from the RNC. Here is a choice quote:
“As a freedom-loving individual who shares our Republican principles of small government, responsible spending and low taxes you are the foundation of the Party.”
Pathetic.
Bonehead and turtle are the enemy we know. The newly elected Tea Party Conservatives who sold us out before their seats were warm are the enemy we did not know.
Never again. The entire electoral system has caved in. It doesn’t matter anymore who wins; we all lose. We recently had a school referendum vote that narrowly passed. Come to find out, people voted more than once. In a predominantly GOP area. AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT.
Three boxes gone; only one left.
We gave them the majority so that THEY CAN ‘CORRECT’ our thinking, just like the democrats do.
After all, it’s for our OWN good...
We’re just ignorant rubes, you know...
They get pleasure out of being dominated by the Dems, but they get even more pleasure by surrendering to them.
Now the Grand Obsolete Party. Sad, but they are bringing it upon themselves.
I'm almost certain those same "some" will all flock up like sheep and do it again.
The thing is that we are not handing control from one party to the other.
We are handing control from government to government.
We have been played for fools for some time now, yet many refuse to see this. They have bought the lies that they have been told so thoroughly that they cannot believe otherwise.
This whole construct is an illusion, quite literally like The Matrix, to make us think that we have a choice and control in this, when we are completely controlled and have no choice whatsoever.
This is precisely a red pill, blue pill situation and most people choose the blue pill, because it’s just easier that way.
I no longer believe that elections of any sort will have any effect on our situation at all. I would like to think that an Article V convention would, but frankly it’s moving too slow to have any effect. it needs to happen yesterday, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen at all, and even if it did, I expect any positive outcome would be ignored by the powers that be.
Which leaves us with one option, and that is the option that they want us to choose, and it will most likely fail, and the outcome would be horrific.
I’m not sure that there is any solution to our predicament.
Since that Cracker from Arizona (McCrazy-2008), I have only voted for CRUZ!!!
In 2008 I still smoked POT!
Look folks, it’s time to wake up. There really and truly is no difference between the Democrat and Republican Parties. Yes, there may be some Republicans who are conservative, but the PARTIES THEMSELVES are both on pretty much the same page, on almost every issue.
Don’t give me any of that “lesser of two evils” nonsense. The GOP is not “lesser” than the Democrats in that regard. Seriously, Pelosi and Boehner and even coming out into the open with working together. What more do you need?
The GOP is a dead letter. Leave it. Instead of whining about how third parties never get anywhere or how hard it would be to replace the GOP, get started working instead. Organize. Get prepared. Work. These aren’t dirty words, y’know.
