It's over.
After bringing us within hours of a shutdown on Friday, congressional leaders backed down and voted to fund the Department of Homeland Security through the rest of the year today.
That didn't happen because they suddenly came to their senses and decided to stop playing political games. It happened because they knew they couldn't get away with it any longer.
They heard the voices of hundreds of thousands of Americans who stood up to let them know we were ready to hold them accountable. They saw reasonable members of Congress standing united, and refusing to budge. And you know they remember what supporters like you did back in 2013 -- when John Boehner let the government shut down for 16 days, and we made sure Americans knew exactly who was to blame.
This is why organizing matters.
John Boehner says this is all about immigration. Well, he should think about how if he had just held a vote on the bipartisan immigration bill that sat on his desk for a year and a half, he could have avoided all of this pain and embarrassment.
Americans are sick of lawmakers governing from crisis to crisis -- our job is to make sure those lawmakers know it. That's what we did this week. With this new Congress, we can bet there's a lot more work to come.
Thanks,
Jack

I seem to recall Republicans winning their largest congressional majorities in nearly 100 years the following election.
Even democrat lies can’t cover their self-evident incompetents forever. But John will pay for his pointless surrender on every policy issues. There really is no point to having a majorty with him in the leadership
Don’t blame you at all. We tried to elect some fighters to get some backbone to the jellyfish we have for a speaker and he refused the transplant.
Damn! Real Shocker! I would have thought that they would have lasted at least another minute or so! Damn Republicans!
It’s over for the Republicans.
I have been voting for them since 1978.
No more.
I am not alone.
The Whigs went extinct in about 4 years.
