A judge telling a divorcee to get a job is a triumph for women’s rights

The wording of the judgment is brutal. An appeal court judge has effectively told the ex-wife of a wealthy veterinary surgeon to “get a job, love” (my abbreviation). It is imperative, said the judge, “that the wife go out to work and support herself”. Tracey Wright, a 51-year-old former legal secretary, riding instructor and mother of two, has lost her appeal against a family court ruling to reduce the maintenance she receives in future from her former husband. The case is seen as a landmark ruling for ex-partners of wealthy spouses. The gravy train has come off the rails.

Sounds more like government enforced slavery.

A wealthy friend at church was paying $9000/mo child support and the ex-wife took him to court for more money. The judge denied the increase and told the ex off.

How is it an attack on marriage?

If anything, it would discourage the wife of a wealthy man to leave him.

How so?

What this means is that ex-wives should not be able to extort their ex-husbands for everything (and the shirt on their backs).

Another attack on marriage.

Did you mean to include a "/S?"

That’s what the judge told my ex-DIL when she asked for maintenance. She filed, expected to get the house, their assets, full custody of their son, and “maintenance” to boot. Commissioner made her provide proof of applying for 10 jobs each week until she landed one, and my son ended up with full legal custody and primary placement of their son. He didn’t want the house - needed lots of repairs.

Missing from the left wing Guardian’s story is the fact that he brought the modification action because he would not be able to afford the payments when he retires in 6 years (he’s older than her, of course) and she wanted to ride the gravy train for life. They were only together for about 9 years.

She ended up with a paid for house and stabling for 3 horses in addition to the payments.

If he hasn’t, he probably ought to ask for DNA tests, as well.

The results could be crushing to the children, though. Rock, meet hard place.

Extort? What if she gave up a career etc. for 25 years and had children and put him through school and facilitated his career?

Did the judge preface his statement with “yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, yip, moom, moom, moom, moom, moom, moom, moom, moom.....”?

I am the recent victim of a California divorce, sole provider, wife never worked during marriage, married over 25 years with 2 minor children that wished to stay with me after wife ran off with another man and filed for divorce. Over 4 years later, 3 major surgeries and on disability, non-family law judge awarded x wife 100 percent of our marital assets, all the debt and almost half of my disability to her. She now has a high income off debt free commercial property and 0 child or spousal support ordered by the court. My crime? I worked my butt off so she could be a stay at home mom, was a faithful husband for over 25 years and fought to protect my kids when she ran off. True story, if I can help anyone avoid a nightmare like this, please let me know.

I remember having arguments with my sisters and my wife about these things. They think just by the fact that some woman married a super rich guy, if they split, the woman should automatically get half of his wealth...no matter how long they've been married.

Now, I don't have a lot sympathy for idiot old guys who ditch their wives of many years who supported the horny bast..s when they were struggling and then the guy marries a golddigger forty-fifty years younger. But neither do I believe a golddigger who married an old fool just to get her hands on the dough he worked for just so she can live the easy life without lifting a finger deserves a ton of moolah.

Even without prenups, there ought to be justice in divvying up the wealth of divorced couples. The being allowed to live in the style you're accustomed to argument carries no weight with me. And even in cases like this one where the man and woman were married for an appreciable period of time is no reason to allow one side to permanently leach off the other.

How exactly is that an attack on marriage? They divorced. She wants him to support her laziness forever. Someone needed to tell her that.

Yes, the horses may well not be his offspring.

Get tired of that old saw. Its rare to unheard of in this day and age that a woman gives up a career so a man can have his.
If someone can prove that she was there for decades, put him through school, and did not work at his insistence, he will indeed be on the alimony ride forever.

But there are also a LOT of lazy women, who don’t want to work, and think that a few years in a mans bed, or pumping out a kid, entitles them to a lifetime of leisure, with full support in grand style. There are many who become mean, fat, cold, or shrews. The marriage deal has two sides.
Commonly, they flip the finger to their side, and play the aggrieved victim when they file for divorce.
Women file in about 3/4 of the cases.
