After Facebook, Inc. was awarded the coveted 2012 Best Place To Work national award by Glassdoor consultants, TechCrunch published an article entitled, Why Facebook, The Best Company To Work For, Doesnt Need A Union. The article explained that liberal, young and engaged workers are so confident of their value they do not need labor protections.

I guess if I was expected to work 70 hours a week I might vote in favor of a union.
Billionaire hypocrites who want unlimited HB1 visas.
Their bus drivers work 70 hours a week?
That’s illegal under FMV regs isn’t it?
I read this as the 'tech workers' generally work around 70hr a week - not the bus drivers (who probably have to work 2 hrs in the morning, and 2 hrs in the afternoon/evening).
It’s the bus drivers that joined the Teamsters, right?
They work for a company named Loop Transportation.
Yes, it is confusing. This was the bus drivers, not the tech workers but reading it, it is not clear if part of the company becomes unionized the whole company does not become unionized at least those tech workers who are paid hourly.
Still at my age I don’t think I’d work 70 hours a week for any amount of money.
>>I guess if I was expected to work 70 hours a week I might vote in favor of a union.<<
Only stupid people work like that. “Work smarter not harder” is what old age teaches one.
I can develop circles around the kids around me when I need to (lately it is all in India so I don’t get to do it that much).
But I see them code themselves into corners and then back it all out. Me, I know exactly what I am to do since I THINK first, then actually do the development.
I predict China, Vietnam, and other countries will now profit handsomely as more tech jobs will be outsourced.
Where is cringingly FReeper guy?
If you are running a federal government backed extortion racket it makes sense to go where the big money is.
Gee, that will curb offshoring. /s
Time and a half ROCKS! (Although taxes on it sucks)I work 60+hours every week and still have time for my family, to be my sons’ cub scout leader and work on my old cars. People just need to get off their a$$.
LMAO!
Loop Transport is a contractor who runs a bus service in Silicon Valley.
Their employees (90 people) joined the Teamsters.
That may be true in the short term but as the coder world sees union gains on the infrastructure/support side, they may start organizing themselves.
As long as the stock options were flowing no one would do this. But as companies age and promises made aren't kept, it may happen. Obviously software is the easiest thing to outsource since it can be done virtually anywhere on Earth, but the people creating real value are not drones from IIT Madras.
One other comment. Boeing is now a company with a $440 billion backlog. The Engineers at Boeing have been unionized for decades (SPEEA). With this example, it's a flimsy argument that tech personnel unions lead to bankruptcy.
That is correct, but I read the article as putting in the tangential comment that the Tech workers put in 70hr work weeks:
i.e., 'The bus drivers for High Tech companies (whose workers often put in 70hr weeks) have joined the Teamsters to increase their leverage for benefits.' That is, the bus drivers aren't putting in the 70hr weeks, but the FaceBook/Apple/Google/HiTech workers are the ones putting in the 70hr work weeks.
Basically get the young College Grads - get them to drink the Company Kool-Aid ('we are going to change the world') - and suck the life out of them for a few years. Sometimes it 'pays off' financially, and sometimes it does not. Still, hard work is good - particularly when you get out of school. Eventually you need to get a life though.
Anyways, that is all my editorializing. I believe the article is just stating that the bus drivers joined the Teamsters, and the 70hr work week does not apply to them.
I work 70 hours a week. I am self employed with a small manufacturing business (cnc shop, tool and die, etc...) The trick is to stay busy doing a variety of things. My 70 hours a week is not all slaving away in front of a computer or machine. I have friends over, have some brews, work on personal projects. I have set up a place to relax and watch a movie. I don’t know the details of the Facebook and Google offices but it looks like they mix up the work with just as much off time. Chances are if you’re some developer at Facebook you live in a 1 bedroom studio with 5 other people and you’d rather stay at the company break room. I’ve seen the pictures inside. They have basketball hoops, lounges, cafeterias, and other ‘fun’ stuff. If people like it, let them work. As for the immigrant nonsense. Screw ‘em. There’s nothing stopping them from setting up shop in Chandigargh.
The only unionized workers I knew in SV were Janitors who got in the last time Jessie Jackson did a SV shakedown.
It was called “Janitors for Justice” which became SEIU

“Nice workers you got here. Be a shame if anything was to happen to them!”
If I was an enterprising fellow I’d start a transportation company. I suspect that it will be a simple matter to underbid the loop transportation corporation now.
