Barnard College, the all-women college affiliated with Columbia University, is considering slashing its foreign-language and science requirements while requiring students to complete a new requirement on diversity, the Columbia Spectator reported Friday.
Barnard is conducting an ongoing review of its core curriculum, which is expected to be fully implemented for the 2016-17 school year.
Just what would qualify for fulfilling the diversity requirement is unclear, although the Spectator said it would be focused on local, global, and social issues. It would also replace the more limited Cultures in Comparison requirement.
While diversity is on the ascent, hard sciences and foreign languages may be on their way out. The school is considering eliminating a required semester of lab science, as well as slashing its foreign language requirement from four semesters to two. During hearings last fall, several students had complained that taking mid-level classes to fulfill the language requirement was too hard. Others complained that the schools core curriculum was too culturally restrictive.
Claire Bouchard, a Barnard senior, said the proposed requirement would allow students to escape an exclusively Western worldview.
Theyre iterating this call for a need to have a more critical perspective of what theyre looking at, and being given the tools to engage in conversation that may not necessarily fall in line with what a lot of the Western world would like to think, and at least be given the ability to don different lenses and to don different points of views, Bouchard told the Spectator.
At least some students are fired up about this new direction.
Im really, really excited about the global and diversity directions that this is taking, said sophomore Rebekah Dempsey. Learning how to think and talk about things that are outside of our comfort zones, and being forced to do that by a liberal arts college, is really important to creating powerful women leaders.
Diverse things, such as organizing, protesting, and generally raising the consciousness of others.
Educating the Marie Harfs of tomorrow.
Fried chicken, sweet potatoe fries, and watermelon should be on that Home Ec curriculum. Don’t forget arugula for the watermelon!

“Shut up and make me a sandwich!”
“What does a degree in diversity qualify you to do?
Go into government and make a fool of yourself.”
Let’s make that:
What does a degree in diversity qualify you to do?
Go into government and waste other peoples money.
“Shut up and make me a sandwich!

And after the diversity education all of those sandwiches will be made with marble rye.

Nothing worth a damn seems to come out of Columbia. Is their only focus social engineering and BS.
They only require one semester of science and that’s too much?
And they’ll require two semesters of a foreign language? That’s about enough to figure out how to punch 2 for English.
If they don’t take science, it will be much easier to fool them with the next round of global cooling, warming, climate change.
Eventually, those pushing global climate change will have enough useful idiots to get government to fund their endeavors. Claiming a consensus of scientists is easier than showing facts and figures. [Aren’t many of those records that do not support the global climate change theories being destroyed?]
‘Yeah, Sweety. You don’t need science. You don’t need to fill your pretty little head with that junk.’
There’s a reason that this school has been called Barnyard for many decades. It got it the old fashoined way, it earned it.
Barbie says, “Math is hard!”.
” Cut any and all federal funding.”
No this is the way to get more.
I certainly hope that Rebekah does not decide to run for political office. we don’t need another Debbie W-S, or Jen Psaki, or Marie Harf.
They’re pursuing indoctrination and ignorance vs real knowledge. Learning a foreign language, Spanish for me, gave at least some insight into Hispanic cultures. Indeed, in today’s USA, four semesters of Spanish would give any of those young ladies a good way to relate to Hispanic people she’s very likely to meet and have to relate to in her post-college life.
College level science courses are good, too, since they give students the knowledge they need to evaluate political claims about science. I took biology, chemistry, and physics in HS, and followed up with geology in college. That science background showed that all sciences are not exact, earth sciences like geology being the most inexact, controversial and speculative. In turn, that knowledge enabled me to see what a frightful Marxist superstition the whole “global warming” hoax is.
You’re so right. Any reasonable science education that includes biology, chemistry, physics, and geology goes a long way to providing the knowledge that enables any reasonably smart person to realize that global warming “science” is so much self-serving Marxist superstition.
What does a degree in diversity qualify you to do?”
It will help these women integrate into ISIS should they seek employment as “wives” to the terrorists.
It’s all about women going to college so they can meet their future husband.
They ought to change the name from “Barnard College” to “Barnyard College” if they do that. Those of you who are in your mid-sixties will likely remember Jerry Rubin and his ilk and will know that an additional word can be inserted between “Barnyard” and “College” by the leftists.
Make it “Chicken ala Don King” and the African-Americans will eat it.
