Russian President Vladimir Putin has stirred controversy after paying tribute to a monument complex to Soviet soldiers killed in Hungary during the suppression of the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising.
Hungary's law states that the present day freedom ‘blossomed' out of that uprising also known as the ‘1956 revolution' and anyone ‘justifying the crimes committed by the communist system is to be punished'. This means that Putin's commemoration of the soldiers violates Hungarian law.
Despite government officials denying that Putin laid a wreath at the monument specifically commemorating Soviet invaders, an advance of the itinerary of Putin's visit said that he would lay a wreath at the memorial for the Soviet soldiers who died fighting the ‘counter-revolution of 1956'.
Putin was met with demonstrations on his first visit to a European Union country since last year's WWII ceremonies in Normandy.
Several thousand people marched through central Budapest, on Monday in protest. They said they were angry to see their Prime Minister Viktor Orban seeking closer ties with Russia instead of inching closer to its EU partners.
Don’t know, but the Japanese leader visits their big shrine still. Causes a lot of strife with the Koreans and Chinese because many war criminals are enshrined there.
I guess all those Hungarians, Poles, Ukrainians, etc. must be Nazis if they don’t like being oppressed and occupied by Russia. /sarcasm

No one is saying the Russians shouldn’t honor their own soldiers in their own country, just they shouldn’t go to a country that was ruthlessly assaulted by those troops and place a wreath commemorating the escapade in the assaulted country.
If nothing else it’s just bad form and poor manners.
Hungary borders on Ukraine.
Putin takes a great deal of pride in being over-the-top.
No doubt he’d love to restore the old USSR glory days.

Sadly, I had to read through a few posts on this thread before someone finally stated his true objective.
I had to read past the “even our enemy soldiers had honor” posts, I had to read past the “hungary should have raised the monument” posts, before someone finally touched on the trught of the matter.
The fact is that Putin does not do something like this without a message. He IS sending a very strong message to all of Hungary. It is intentional and it strong.
We should all be planning for a WW3 scenario. Between Putin, ISIS, Cuba, etc, we are headed for a world of hurt.

Were Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Sakharov, Solzhenitsyn or Pushkin “savages”? I dislike Putin as much as most people here, but I don’t believe in wallowing in anti-Russian bigotry.

The ONLY Russian soldiers deserving of respect are the ones that choose not to shoot the Hungarian Freedom fighters and chose instead to turn their Soviet tanks and themselves to the Hungarian cause in 1956. You can be sure they paid dearly after Moscow sent in the Asians unable to understand any European language, Russian among them.
IMO, they don’t look like what I’d consider “savages”. Maybe Eastern European versions of rednecks or white trash.
