That icon of police transportation, a vehicle so sturdy and beloved and ubiquitous that it became virtual wallpaper on TV cop shows and local streets the Ford Crown Victoria is dead.
The upshot is this: For many police agencies, its time to buy a new car.
Ford stopped making the Crown Vic four years ago, saying sales to the public had fallen to the point that the car is no longer viable, even if demand from police agencies remained strong. Fuel efficiency (or in the Crown Vics case, inefficiency) played a role.

There were several different types of vehicles used as police cars across the country, not just the Crown Vic.

Fuel efficiency (or in the Crown Vics case, inefficiency) played a role. Translation: Government regulation killed it.

If Ford had put just a little effort into styling the crown vic (and maybe a 2 door GT model) it would have had an even longer run.

Translation: Government regulation killed it. Well, that and the fact that the police version would sometimes explode when it was tapped from the rear.

I remember when all the cop cars were the Plymouth Fury. When I was about 17 I rode with my dad in his 440 magnum Fury patrol car. The speedo was certified to 140 and I saw the needle pegged as we ran down a car on an east Colorado 2 lane highway. Flat flying low.

For some reason, the Alabama Highway Patrol used AMC cars, (I can’t recall the model) for several years.
I have read several places where it was indicated they would do over 160MPH.
The Florida HP used Thunderbirds with 460s at one time. I have no idea how fast they would go but it must have been scary.
A few months ago there was a minor accident at a crossroads only around 300 yards from me. This was around 10 P.M. For some reason 6 or 7 FHP and Deputy cars stayed there for a couple of hours. The flashing blue lights on the FHP cars were so bright that they hurt my eyes.

If I recall correctly, it was a body-on-ladder-frame design.
I doubt any true unibody can take the punishment they could withstand.
