With well over 700,000 concealed handgun permit holders in Texas, there is a good chance that someone next you in a grocery store or restaurant is carrying a concealed handgun. But some are only satisfied if others actually know that they are carrying. They think that by openly carrying guns they can make others comfortable with guns. They want to make a statement.
Texas lawmakers are now wrestling with the questions of campus carry and open carry. They couldnt face a clearer choice between enhancing safety or making political statements.
Open carry advocates carry rifles because they cant legally openly carry handguns. While no problems have occurred, simply handling a rifle as opposed to keeping a handgun in a holster, raises the risk that something might go wrong.
Open carry advocates have not been the best at public relations. When Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick predicted that campus carry would pass while open carry would not, the Open Carry Tarrant County leader, Kory Watkins, threatened, Going against The Constitution is treason and my friend that is punishable by death.

I wholeheartedly agree that Texas students who are otherwise legally able to carry (age, qualified), should be able to carry on a college campus.
I hope both pass.
It's not as if the criminals care if they have a permit or not -- so stop infringing everyone else's right to bear arms.
Hell why can’t I carry? The terrorists have threatened all family members of the Military. I know the terrorists are here, I’ve seen the border. Hell I saw the president.
The priority is the removal of all state and federal gun and arms control laws. The 2a does fine all by itself. There’s nothing wrong with open carry. We have it in PA. When you get rid of these unconstitutional laws, then people stop making political statements. As for campus carry, it shouldn’t even be an issue. The real issue, and it is solved by getting rid of laws, is why my 20 year old daughter can’t carry on campus or any other place for that matter. She was able to shoot much better than most police by the age of 10. She’s safe. She’s responsible. But she is 20. That’s old enough to join the military and die for her country. (Note: she has no desire to be in combat and shares my views on women in combat.)
Yep..... constitutional carry.....simple, free, common sense.......
Are not students living sentient beings endowed by our Creator with the natural right of self protection that is acknowledged by our Constitution’s second amendment?
I think you just designed a t-shirt, Squantos.
The Second Amendment
The only common sense gun law necessary
I support college and open carry, though I am not in school, nor will I open carry. In my opinion, a more valid need exists for 2A support: DoD carry.
I am an older white male. A non-denominational Christian, I have been married to one woman for 30 years. We are still raising children and have more grandchildren than I would like to admit (Im not that old!). I have over 20 years military service and still serve in the Reserve. My civilian job is in defense and requires clearance. I have no criminal recordmy last ticket was over 30 years ago. I have qualified on numerous weapons in the service, have a CCW, carry and practice regularly. This is probably the most I have ever written about myself beyond a resume, but its not about me; it about everyone who works in the DoD, with the exception of security and law enforcement forces.
We are all prohibited from exercising our Second Amendment rights simply because we work on Federal property. In other words, because we work to provide for the National Defense; we are excluded from protecting ourselves or those around us, even though we have been subjected to the most comprehensive checks that the nation can devise.
Not only can I not carry to work, I cant even carry on my way to work. Essentially, I am forced to go without protection for the majority of my workday. When I travel, even in my own car, I cannot carry. For the entire length of the trip, I am disarmed. It has bothered me for years, but it was violently reinforced last weekend.
Having missed the deadline for billeting, I was staying at a motel in the local area for my Reserve weekend (I travel over 400 miles one-waywithout reimbursement). Saturday evening, I was watching the tube when I heard a woman screaming for help. Quickly throwing on some clothes, I ran out to help. Another man in his 50s responded as well.
A young woman (20s) was running down the parking lot screaming and crying while her boyfriend ran off in the other direction. The girl was bleeding profusely from what turned out to be a small wound on her chinfacial wounds bleed like crazy. I escorted her to the office, staffed by a young ME male to get her cleaned up and call LE. I asked for hydrogen peroxide to clean the wound, but he said all he had was alcohol. The motel had no first aid supplies, not even a band-aid (made me realize I need to carry at least an IFAK in the car). She was bleeding enough that the clerk didnt want to let her in the office, but I asked him for a towel and ice. I had the girl sit down and apply pressure and the bleeding subsided enough to let her in the office. I asked him to call LE, and spoke with the girl.
She told me that she was only in town because she had just bailed her scumbag boyfriend out of jail that very day! He was in jail for assaulting her and she refused to press charges, and bailed him out. In payment, he assaulted her again, slamming her face into the counter or bath tub. Anyway, I counseled her to press charges and went back to my room, wondering again about the state of our country and saddened to see a young woman so willfully stupid. Then I though about what could have happened had the boyfriend remained to fight.
I am not in bad shape for my peer group, but I am not a match for a high-test, raging juvenile delinquent. I imagine that combined with the other older man, we may have been able to hold him, or at least prevent him from hurting anyone else, but what if he was armed?
To tell you the truth, had I been carrying and he attacked, my only thought would have been the 3-shot mantra: two-to-the-chest; one-to-the-head. As it turned out, no one was killed and the blood was limited to a girl who probably wont learn anything from the whole situation. My wife reminded me that had I shot the perpetrator-even if attacked-I would be in court, probably facing charges. I am not sure, given the locale and circumstances, but I do know one thing for certain. I was in a dangerous situation without a weapon simply because I was on duty for the weekend.
The first lesson of carrying is that it does you no good to have the perfect weapon if you dont have it with you when you need it. It really grates on me that I am prevented from self defense simply because I provide for the nations defense. I think we need to pass a bill requiring federal installations follow the same laws as everyone else. I dont want to carry at work. I simply want to be able to secure my weapon in my vehicle so that I am not defenseless for the majority of my week.
I like that shirt!
I also support campus carry, open carry & constitutional carry.
“Free” won’t sell with Polidiots, Texans or not ....no profit in it....:o)
Carried a sidearm almost every day of my life from age 18 on in military, then as a deputy, contractor, citizen and goobermint employee. Will continue to do such even when they fake a law against it.
Ya’ll stay safe !
No, they are temporary wards of the institution (at least in the minds of the institution).
As a firearms instructor (both civilian and LE), I’ve come to the conclusion that most open carry is a political statement with absolutely no thought behind it. Why?
1/ A displayed firearm (or a badge) is a “shoot here” indicator if it hits the fan.
2/ I have yet to see open carry with anything other than a level 1 holster. (If you want to look like John Wayne that badly, spend the money on a level 2 or 3 retention holster, then practice with it so that some numb-nuts kid can’t walk up and grab the firearm from you.)
Think how Ft. Hood would have ended if our military had been armed.
Constitutional Carry would be better.
That is what we should have. Everywhere.
I do—every day.
I’m not suggesting that everyone should carry on the installations, but not being able to carry even to and from work is unreasonable. Wearing a uniform or carrying a CAC shouldn’t mean you leave your rights behind.
This policy wasn’t driven by anything other than an Army general who felt he had to have a consistent policy. The other services followed suit because it was the easiest route, but it doesn’t make sense given the current environment.
“It really grates on me that I am prevented from self defense simply because I provide for the nations defense.”
That sure is ridiculous. Plus, Nidal Hassan.
Why should any constitutional right be limited by geography?
