Tokyo-based publisher Daisan Shokan released a book Tuesday containing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad previously published in the French satirical weekly magazine Charlie Hebdo.
About 500 bookstores nationwide have expressed interest in selling the book, titled “Islam Heito Ka, Fushi Ka” (“Anti-Islam Hate, or Satire?”), but will use discretion in deciding whether to stock it.
Others have said they will not stock it in response to opposition by Muslims in Japan.
Riot police from the Metropolitan Police Department were stationed around Daisan Shokan’s headquarters in Shinjuku Ward on Tuesday morning.

I’m going to be picking up my copy ASAP. I see this as a chess move. Japan is advancing a piece in the game and seeing how the Muslims respond. If the locals are smart, they’ll ignore this.
But Muslims have seldom shown much smarts.

You are mostly correct. There are approximately 180,000 Muslims in Japan and between 30 to 40 small mosques. The mosques are watched closely and the Japanese law enforcement agencies have pushed a large number of students through Arabic and Farsi language training programs.
I predict there may be some “lone wolf” responses to this. Some local bookstore staff may be attacked, but nothing major. There is simply no way for a terrorist to “blend in” to the population in Japan.
This is a Japanese invitation to their microscopic Muslim minority to do something —anything— to serve as justification for deporting most or all of them.
Maybe not official deportation, but should there be shenanigans, well then there will be maybe some special police measure, like they ALL get monthly police visits at their house, or something like that.
After Aum ShinRiKyou, well, the Japanese do not trifle with even the tiniest of terror risks...
Gaijin, as far as the Justice Ministry of Japan is concerned, visa issuance, renewal, revocation, are all internal administrative proceedings. Nobody foreigner has a “right” to a visa. Family members who may be impacted by the deportation of a foreigner can request an administrative hearing, and it may even be granted, but this is not a right.
There has been a story circulating around Tokyo for many years that in the immediate aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, Japanese authorities selected 500 names from the top of their “suspicious Muslim” list — people who were believed to have some association with radicals — rounded them up, drove them to the airport, and put them on planes out of the country.
No media in Japan reported it, nobody outside of Japan was interested in taking a Muslim viewpoint at that time. Various other efforts at stirring up sympathy using the “poor abused Muslim” schtick that seems to work so well in Europe and America have been met by stony official silence and media boycotts.
Killing Goto was a bad move. No doubt this book has been on official hold for a while, but was given a go ahead after his murder. Islam is going to find out that Japan is a very bad enemy, and they can play rough too.
