Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have better self esteem and less depression as young adults if they were open about their sexual orientations as adolescents, a new study suggests.
Attempts to hide sexual orientation are generally unsuccessful, and the result is more abuse and more depression, the authors say in the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry.
What's needed, said Stephen Russell, the studys lead author, are "supporting environments so that all kids can figure out and be as true to themselves as they can be.

And how does it effect the rest of the schools morale?
I don’t care about their self esteem.
This is just more evidence that homosexuality is a mental disorder. If being queer were normal, then it would make no difference if the person “outed” themselves at any age.
Mentally ill on parade.
Mental Illness needs pushed back in the closet
Because they’d have had more time to convince themselves they’re normal?
Dude, start them out at 2nd grade.
The author’s name probably explains his affinity for abomination.
I started teaching piano to a young boy when he was eight.
He is now a freshman in high school.
In the intervening years, his OCD, Perfectionist father drove him crazy with ridiculous demands on him for tai kwon do 3X a week, soccer practice, football, piano practice, weight issues, etc, and then the father got caught in serial affairs and the parents got divorced. Although the mom had custody, the father continued to exercise control over the boy, but reneged on child support and heaped constant criticism and ridicule on both the boy and his mother.
I saw it coming...the boy began to develop effeminate mannerisms and now that he is in high school is being actively recruited into the “gay lifestyle”. He shared some very rude videos with me (under the guise of learning a new song) and asked me if I was a “homophobe”.
I told him I didn’t “hate” anybody, and that my faith says that homosexual activity is a sin, just like adultery and infidelity. I also cautioned him against being “Used by someone else’s agenda”, and encouraged him to be an individual that is not swayed by outside forces. What more could I say? I am only a friend, not a member of his family, and have no authority.
I felt so helpless, and feel that I didn’t do enough, and I will probably lose my job over it.
I would prefer to continue being a positive influence in this boy’s life, but I can’t pretend that homosexuality is a good thing just to make him feel better about himself.
Please pray for me...I need it!
The Gaak-o-meter just broke!
Tough truth and love is always the best...praying...
Yet another reason to home school. Have done it with all of my children (many of them) and they all have a Biblical Worldview!
Thanks dear FRiend, for your prayers. You are right about that.
